sandblast and por and paint
just got done with frame and axles, i sandblasted all of it yesterday. sprayed the por 15 this morning and shot some urethane with flattener to soften the shine, looks good enough for me,now lets get back to the tub.

I thought POR-15 need rust to adhere to? Why wouldn't you just use paint products if you go to all the work to sand blast the metal clean? Just asking.

I read the directions after i sprayed it,big mistake, now i am wondering if i should just quit now, maybe blast it off again and get it rusty? Or does it say on the can to apply to sandblasted metal? seems to me that por is a great product that will look good as base for paint that will chip and scratch off! Good question though.

I have used POR15 on my blazer frame, it was rusty. I also have made and painted POR15 on some small parts unrelated to the blazer.
I made a tow ring to go into a 2x2 reciver, like a tow pintle. I sandblasted it then used some acid just like metal ready from POR. and painted the stuff on it. it hasn't flaked or chipped, the POR15 is like a powder coat, you could tell someone it was powder coat and they would most likely never know the difference. I have dropped the thing on the ground and has some scratches and stuff but not actual flakes or chips. I don't know any of the science of por15 and I could be wrong BUT I would trust your work as long as you followed the prep directions and let it cure like it says . POR15 is some seriously sticky and thick stuff, hell it wont come off your hands for a week! another thing is the directions say to use POR metal ready, wich is phosphoric acid and zinc phosphate(or something like that) it "neutralizes rust" so that would be close to blasted metal. I would not sweat it and it looks outstanding, nice work.

you can apply to prepped clean metal. sand blasting leave a giid bite for it. you should be fine. i would be more worried that you ddint give it time to cure before top coat

You are fine, it etches into the metal, or nuetralized rust. POR 15 is supposed to be covered with a top coat, according to my local paint supplier. If at all possible with a UV resistant paint.

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight. That's from their website. I doubt your frame will see much sunlight. I did the same thing on my frame after I had it media blasted. I don't see the necessity of a top coat for areas that are never directly exposed to the sun....per their instructions.

POR-15 ROCKS!
Did the inside of my hood and rad support area when I took my front clip off to swap a 454 in I used SILVER POR-15 on the insides of my rockerboxes = bubble bubble bubble into the rust and when it dries = hard like ceramic or powder coat. Even the black would bubble or perculate on the heavy rust area, then dry smooth! Solid stuff Also did the cowl area but it's hard to see in this pic...

You can't get UV rays unless you have direct sunlight.
UV rays don't bounce off the concrete or sneak under things, they are a process of direct sunlight. So, that doesn't make sense to me at all. If ONLY UV rays will cause that then it's not an issue. And, according to the can I am reading....ONLY UV rays are an issue. If it turns purple when not exposed to direct sunlight.....somebody has some explaining to do.

I really like POR-15 because you can do as much or as little prep as you want. If parts of the chassis will be seen I spend extra time sandblasting the rust away, If it's a part that wont be seen you can just put the POR-15 directly on the rust. It also does a great job of filling the pits left over from the rust, just put it on heavy as it's self leveling. As for bare metal I sandblast many small parts like bumper brackets...etc in a blasting cabinet then apply POR-15. It is rock solid. It will stick to sandblasted metal better than shiney metal after grinding.
