Problem after removing voltage regulator!
Hey everyone, I encountered a problem after doing the voltage regulator elimination procedure. I wired my '72 chevy truck exactly how the post about eliminating the regulator stated. When I started the truck after doing this I was getting 17 volts at the battery, normal?? When I went to start the truck the next day the battery was dead. Any suggestions on where I should start checking!! Thanks in advance for the help!!

Re: Problem after removing voltage regulator!
you say you eliminated your regulator, I assume you replaced your alternator with an internal regulator and so 17 volts may be on the high side but I think you should be ok. Normal would be 14-16 or even 17 when running. If your battery was run down and the alternator was trying to charge it, making for more of a load on the alternator, it would not surprise me to see 17 volts.

Re: Problem after removing voltage regulator!
17 volts will burn out your lights, radio, & any sensitive electrical assesories besides ruining the battery. 14-14.5 is max. If you eliminated the voltage reg. you have to use an internal reg. alt. If you did change the alt. it is wired wrong or has a bad internal regulator.

Re: Problem after removing voltage regulator!
Interesting, my truck runs 15 to 15.5 all the time and have never had a problem. I must be lucky.

Re: Problem after removing voltage regulator!
Internal regulator may be bad....with truck off, key off and connector pulled off the alternator I am reading 2 volts out of terminal 1 on alternator. This draw most likely drained my battery overnight. Is there a way to check the internal regulator??
