Rear axle 1970 c-20 swap with?

I realize i am not doing what i should. Its late and i was hoping for a pointer maybe.

I am thinking about swaping my L.S 3/4 ton rear axle with 16.5 rims for a posi 3/4 ton with 16 inch rims? I got a quote of $600. from a local Truck dismantler. He was saying that is for a single rim posi out of a 3/4 ton 1980 chevy 8 bolt.

Reason for this option of mine is i have to drive up a 1 mile dirt road and a peg leg does not help me with a load going up. I am having issues with dry ground and not wanting to go 4x4 ing right now. just want both tires to get me up the hill.

I have been talking with a buddy about my 3/4 ton being a posi. Since it has been sitting for years prior to me being third owner. The first owner had it sit for 20 years. The next owner did minor repairs i heard ( head gaskets, timing sparkplugs, oil and trany flush) with a look only and fluid check of the rear.

So since i dont have alot of experience with older trucks. I was talking with a buddy about the posi on these trucks. He said that I might have a posi since i havent rippied the dif. cover off yet. that the clutches could be dirty and gunked up. He was saying that i could flush the gears and clutches off and clean it up getting any real "OLD" or "Semi truck hub oil" out off the dif.

His last truck rear he had worked on had a broken axle shaft on the Passenger side. Due to the owner horsing the truck. "Driving backwards then slamming it into drive and punching the gas"

So here is my question Should i look for the "code" on the axle or just yank the cover and clean the old oil out and change the gasket? Get a real look at the rear instead of raising the rear and spinning on wheel?

Does the rear look like this one or is it a Dana 60?

The Rear doesnt look like that one. I got close to it to find a Tag still attached to the Dif Cover. It reads 4613 with 354 below. So I am assuming a Dana 60 with the ring being 46 teeth and the Pinion being 13 which comes out to 3.54 gear ration. there is a cast number on the case as well 030255, not sure what it means nothing on google.


Ok so If what i found is a Dana 60 What should my best way of cleaning this and getting the posi up and working correctly? Is there any links or prior posts on Dana? rear ends?

That's a Dana and 3.54 was an available ratio.

As far as your posi goes, I don't know any other good way of evaluating it other than tearing it open and taking a look. There were/are different types of posi units.

The easiest thing to do is get a cone clutch unit from Eaton. If you swap your carriers, then all you ned to do is shim side-to-side to bring the backlash back in. No messing with the pinion depth.
