Smile New Guy from the High Desert

Hey all, been reading up in the forum and trying to educate myself on how to remake my 1961 Apache. Thought I would do a small introduction.

I bought El Diablo last year, and have not had much time or extra money to start the build process, but I hope that changes in the next few months. I was told it had a 350 with a 350 trans.

When I bought it the PO told me it was a daily driver...LOL...well it was not by a long shot. I got to his house and he had it running all ready for me to go home, should have been my first warning.

I noticed some some from underneath the truck, and was told it was from the tranny leaking onto the mufflers and burning off. He said he put some roof shingles on the mufflers to help with the smoke until I got it home. Needless to say, my wife was following me home and called me on my cell to tell me the truck was on fire underneath at 55 mph. Thus the name El Diablo. :-)

To make a long story short, got the truck home and then have not been able to get it to turnover at all again. Ugh. Daily driver my butt!

So, if there are any New Mexicans that would like to be a mentor and are happy to be paid in liquid refreshment of their choice, please let me know.

Old custom classic trucks have soul. Their dashboards aren't plastic, and they've survived both the best and worst of what the 20th century had to offer. For the owners of these trucks, it's often the same story. Through both good and bad times they persevered, until one day they could turn the key and roll up in a customized truck everyone with good taste would admire.Custom Classic Trucks

Re: New Guy from the High Desert

Gorgeous truck!

I'm in a similar situation- there's a LOT of info on this site- and the folks are exceedingly helpful and friendly.

and coming from an absolute newbie wannabe someday mechanic-
these trucks are pretty straightforward to work on.

It's likely something very simple. I'm confident you'll track it down soon.
