Stuck spindle removal
I have a front axle form a 72 K5 that I am dis-assembling for spare parts (axle was junk). Anyway, I have the hubs and rotors off, the splash guard off. I can't get the spindle to come loose. My book says to smack it with a plastic hammer, but I think it's just too tight or rusted in to pop out.
Any ideas on how to get the spindle out of the knuckle without ruining anything? Once the spindle is off, the axle is supposed to pull through the knuckle, right? I've never pulled one of these apart before. I'm kind of practicing with this one before I do the u-joints and ball joints on my jimmy.

Wack the crap out of that spindle. Thats the only way its coming off. Then yes the axle pull out right through the knuckle.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
OMG did that suck. I just mutilated a 4x4 with a sledge hammer and used some chisels once there was a gap. One down, one to go. I'll have to wait until tommorow though cause that makes a LOT of noise.
Thanks for the tips.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
Alternate rotating taps.I use a solid nylon block and a heavy hammer.I also have a cold chisel I`ve ground sharp (and often need to regrind) to drive between the spindle and knuckle to get it started.soaking a good penetrant on it can help, like PB Blaster.
I never cuss when I get a tough one...never.

They also have a tool that screws onto the spindle. It looks like a big socket. Then you either screw a slide hammer onto the socket, or use a bolt and screw it into the stub axle end. I use the slide hammer method.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
They make a tool for it? Of course they would. I can't imagine having to do this on the trail.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
If your spindle has been off recently, its alot easier to remove and it comes off with a couple taps of the hammer. So then you dont need the tool. I always grease up the tight fit for the next time i take it apart.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
The slide-hammer tool is really the way to go with this. I use to work on 4x4s for a living (all models) and that thing saved a countless amount of time and effort. THIS is the one I have. It's a ltlle expensive, but if it keeps you from destroying a spindle with a hammer, or mashing a finger....
It really comes in handy for a 4x4 owner.

Re: Stuck spindle removal
I wondred if there was such a thing for front drive axles.I`ve known about slide hammer tools for rears, like Ford-type.
Randy,The power company used to mount the feed conduit to houses using them as spacers off the wall. They were always mounted "in my way" and by the time I got there it was backfilled...couldn`t move. So,I`d unscrew the clamp and toss the block in the tool bins.I used to hand them out to everybody. That was years ago and i`m hopin`mine lasts. It`s a great helper...about 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 5".It`s held up to alot of abuse.
