68 I looked at today, questions

Ive been looking for a period correct camper to run on my K20. I found one through a buddy, but it comes with a 68 Chev camper special truck under it.

The only problem with the camper is that it is a little short for the bed. Gap between the camper and the back of the cab is pretty large..6-8 inches. I always thought all the long bed trucks were the same length between manufacturers. No?

Now as far as the truck goes...yes its an anniversary truck. It is really really rusty though. Hood, fenders, grill, support, rockers, corners, box even the power brake booster looks ready to rust through...LOL.

It does have an interesting add on though. The guy called it a gear splitter. Its made by Warn. Its a long shift arm that sits to the left of the four speed arm. Is this something that's worth having and would it work with the four speed on my K20. Is this kinda like having an overdrive..or just a lot more gears like the big rig guys have?

He's had this thing since 78 and never had the camper off. I asked if he still had the tailgate thinking this might be a hard to find take off tailgate. He had it and no it wasn't nice, very well used with toneau snaps even.

Im trying to figure out if this thing is worth having considering the camper is a weird size. Im thinking about a reskin anyway, might be able to close up the goofy gap. I have no idea what the frames of campers look like under the skin. Im assuming its wood.

Maybe the gear splitter is worth putting in my other truck?

Any comments or ideas?

Might make a nice parts truck with the C&C package and
a nice large journal core motor.

Well I do like the camper you have. And I did notice yours also sits back aways from the cab...interesting. I do have a good truck to put it on though. (My K20) And unfortunately I think (afraid to get the exact number) I'm into my panel around 6x what you paid for that set up but you sure wouldn't think that to look at it....someday =)

I went out and measured mine and it measures 4" from the camper to the back of the cab, right at the top of the front bed panel.

Maybe I need to come to WA for an extended vacation and put that panel together for you...

Im pretty sure I stated it was an anniversary truck in the opening thread.

He wont part it and he wont separate anything. If a person wanted a 50th its almost the same as what I have already...a frame. Pretty much all the metal is shot. I asked him if they took it to the ocean alot...lol. The door panels are ok, the seat is a bench that isnt shot, but is so filthy it will need to be replaced.

Trust me guys if this truck was worth having I would have bought it on the spot. I asked him his rock bottom price and he only came down a hundred bucks. 1500 is way more than this truck is worth...you couldnt part it and make your money back. Ive been racking my pea brain all afternoon trying figure out a way to make it worth my while to pick it up.

No one has any thought on the gear splitter thingy?

I just thought I would ask. All I really need is a couple of nice seatbelts (or covers) and a good dash pad. I've got a set of buddy buckets that I will have recovered like STLLOOKN did.

What do 50th belts look like? Ill keep my eyes peeled for you. Heck I may have some myself. I know I have a set of visors...not perfect but not horrible.

I would seriously avoid any camper that old that has spent it's life in the Northwest. They are wood framed and everyone that I have ever seen is wasted. I learned the hard way

I have to agree...I have looked at several of the OpenRoad motorhomes, that have the same construction, with the 2x2 wood frame covered with aluminum siding...they have all had dry rot and leak! Unless it has been kept in a barn or under cover...then it should be good.

I think they are a little darker than the tan ones you find in most trucks. My visors are good, but my dash is cracked, .

Yeah, Ive looked at several I know what your saying. He's had this one serviced many times. You can see where most of the trim has been taken off and resealed.

I looked at a really nice Avion a few months back, but when I stepped inside the floors were super bad. Ill just keep lookin.

Doing a quick Google search, warn used to make an overdrive unit for jeeps and scouts, but I don't think they made anything for fullsize trucks. Are you sure the splitter was made by Warn?

I've seen lots of those old campers going for $1-300.Unless it's a real good example of a name brand ie. Lance etc. I would offer much less than he wants. Basically he will be lucky to sell it at all IMO.
That splitter sounds interesting though. If I was you I would pass if the truck is a rust bucket

Yeah I finally did a google search on the splitter, spent about an hour reading stuff. It is a Warn.

Im am going to be taking a pass on the whole thing. There are some pretty good deals on campers. I just need to look harder, stllookn was kind enough to point one out I missed
