4x4's and 1/4 mile times

I see plenty of 2WD trucks "esp.67-72" down the track,but very few 4X4'S.Any of you guys take your trucks down the 1/4 mile?

that' my plan at the end of this project,
i had a 76 ran 14's on 33in tow tires..
had a stroker 383 in it

this one.. once done should be breaking 300 plus HP, and im hoping to break 15's on 8in lift and 37's.... it's not a dodge or a ford diesel.. im working on a major disadvantage compared to them.... jerks.. and their fuel injection.. and diesels.. and turbos.. .. jerks

It is not a good idea. You are not supposed to "lock in" your tranfer case and hubs on any hard paved surface.....a drag strip, with it's sticky spray? worse! Something has to give, you will certainly find the weakest link.

OH LORD NO! it will be in 2WD.. NOT 4WD....

i would fully expect admin or a board member to come personally slap me for doing the 1/8mile or 1/4 mile in 4wd..

um, you could but why? Kind of like you won't see Camaros or Corvettes in the woods or driving over big rocks....Unless you just want to know how fast it will go? That to is probably not the greatest Idea. 4wd's aren't known for impressive handling at high speed. Just my opinion...wear your seatbelt.

well back in the "day" before kids i ran imports.. mainly mistu's and subarus.. ( i still love my subarus ) but i got beaten by a diesel...
and i jsut want to know.. yeap that's about it..

kind of related.
a few years back a bunch of rotary guys went to the track. I brought my little vert, and alot of other rx's showed up.
one guy was trying to break into the 10's with a 3rd gen Rx-7. he trailed it to the track, did a warm up run, and threw the diff on his first real run right off the line.
he was so pissed, he 'had' to run something, so he unhooked the trailer and ran his 200? Chevy 3500 4x4 duramax!
That sucker ran in the low 14's!!! it was faster than the Rx I brought!!
he did do a bunch of stuff to it though, chip exhaust etc.

So,not a 67-72, but still chevy, 4x4 hD truck, and hauling more than hay!
I still laugh when I see the vid on my pc.

Wow!!!that's one fast 3500.Back in the day I had a 454 chevelle,with open headers and slicks it ran 12.8 but with street tires and closed exhaust it wasn't much faster than that.

4x4's aren't made for drag racing, if you wanna run the track, build a car for it.

On the other hand, this thread does bring up some good memories.

I had a '69 440 six-pack roadrunner back in the day that ran low 12's with full exhaust & street tires.

4x4s may not be built for draggin, but it's definitely fun when the haulER can run almost as fast as the haulEE. And Diesels make it pretty easy.

What about sand drags. I grew up in the sand drag scene. My brother has some pics of a few 70's blazers with padels on all 4 wheels. Im talking about pics from the 80's. Here in Pismo Beach dunes people still go crazy for the drags. You see alot of older Chevy,Ford and Jeep from stock to full caged. Does this count for 1/4 mile times?

There is tire "slippage" involved in sand drags, it's not like dragging on asphalt.

I went to the deisel drags last year , almost all of them were in 4 wheel drive to get traction. the ones that wernt were just spinning the rears . It was pretty funny to see some of the chevys staging, when they would start to spool it up with ther foot on the brake, you could see the front tires toeing in and flexing all the IFS rubber bushings.

I remember some of the ole mud drags near Kempton,Pa.. There was an old Model T on a Blazer frame,it stole the show!!That was back in the 70's the area was loaded with pheasants back then.

I raced dirt drags at the Kempton Fair too. They had the most street trucks out of all the tracks. Over 50.

About the model T . There are 2 that i know of. A black one called "Young Henry" , and a green one with a white roll bar.

Hey Tim, Yes that is Line Mt Race Track.
We missed you at the spring race. But there is a race this coming weekend, so you can come to that one. Its the 'short track' race in the bush on Saturday, and drags and short obstacle on Sunday.

There is zero problem running a truck in 4wd on a drag race track. I see it every week from several trucks. Some of these newer diesels and alot of turbo 5.3' and 6.0 trucks and they are turning low 11's In 4x4 only time there would be any issues would be high power hard turns .If you truck breaks making a turn on pavement be happy becuase it would have broken for sure the first time you went off the road.

i dragged my 03 dodge quad cab cummins in 4 hi all the time. 15.50 best time.
And i fully intend to drag the 71 as soon as i get the 496 into it. yippee
