Wrecked 72
This used to be my sisters truck and she wrecked it. Im debating on what do to, it pretty much needs a whole new front clip, motor trans. The cab is pretty rust free (besides the rockers). I really like 1/2 tons because they ride so much better and they are sportier. But if its not worth it im getting rid of it.

Re: Wrecked 72
Part it.
Honestly you would need to replace the whole frame. Cant be that hard to find one in Iowa.

Re: Wrecked 72
Yes the frame can be repaired but, the problem is that the front horns have been cut off. I would figure at least a thousand dollars to repair. While it's on the trailer take it to some bodyshops for estimates.
The best thing to do IMO, would be to find a frame, clean it up and start building a truck out of it. you've got a lot of good parts to start with.

Re: Wrecked 72
There has to be a "go to" guy in your area whose primary business is frame repair. He is the guy who straightens frames for all of the body shops in the area and is usually affordable. Find him then take the truck which is already on a trailer to him and get an estimate with you providing parts. He can tell you what is necessary probably a front clip and some frame horns cut-off at a local junk yard.
Cost? Depends on the guy and how much straightening is required. There is one of these guys close to me that would probably straighten the frame in a couple days and install the doghouse to insure fit for less than $500. Last edited by BHyatt; 06-30-2009 at 01:29 AM. |

Re: Wrecked 72
Longbed frames are cheap. I just sold a nice one a couple nights ago for $100
You would spend much more time and money repairing that one.

Re: Wrecked 72
Thanks for all the help guys! and the tailgate is just about the only thing that doesnt have any damage to it and really at this point im debating on whether to just find a whole nother truck with maybe a bad cab and just swap out all the good peices onto another one. I think i priced this truck out on lmc for everything to fix it besides motor/trans to around $3000

Re: Wrecked 72
That thing is tweaked! I'd use it for parts on another truck or part it out for others-nothing more.

There is a frame on Des Moines craigslist right now. I just happened to see it. It says it is in Altoona. That should be pretty close.

maybe you should check with LockDoc, he's not too far from DesMoines (in montezuma), and usually has a line on parts. I got my short frame from him.

Re: Wrecked 72
Looks like a good start to a SWB conversion. Get another frame get it clean and built up, then start cab and body panels. My 68 is made up of a swb frame and 2 other trucks.

Re: Wrecked 72
Part it out, frame and body are junk, except the tailgate. Keep what you need and sell the rest.

Re: Wrecked 72
Man you Cali guys sure call some solid trucks junk, don't mean any offense, just you should try fixing what we have here in the rust belt. A few dings and rocker rust are far from junk!
Oh now that, I'm done preachin' Aunt Jamima, sounds like a good idea to me finding another and using the two to make a good one.

Re: Wrecked 72
I'm not offended, I haaaaate rust. I figure, why should I deal with it if I don't have to and I have a welder. I've replaced quarter panels, taillight panels, patch panels, etc. but I would not choose to do those things if I could avoid it. I've never replaced a rocker or a cab corner and hope I never will. In this case, however, you have a rusty cab, munched front end, bed has been pushed into the cab, frame horns are cut and frame is bent. That equals junk to me. Strip it of anything decent and junk the rest.
