Speedo Problem

Bought this truck last summer and speedo
has been off ever since. It read 60 mph when
I'm was actually doing 49 mph. I changed
speedometer driven gears. Went from a red to
a gray. I think thats 21 to 22 teeth. More teeth
speedometer cable spins slower...speed reads lower.
Speedo is still reading 7 mph too high. The Chevy dealer
tells me that they don't make a 23 tooth driven gear. He says
that the only choice at this point is to change the driving
gear in the tailshaft. I never done that so I'm reluctant to
attempt it.

So other that spending $280 on a programmable
speedo+sender from Auto Meter, are there any other
otions?

Swap the drive gear! Are we talkin' A/T? Drop the drive shaft, remove sleeve with driven gear, remove tailshaft housing (4 bolts), depress spring clip holding drive gear in place and slide drive gear off shaft. Reverse order for install. Jack and support truck up by the rear end and you won't lose any fluid.

May those who love us, love us, any of those who do not love us, may God turn their hearts.
And if God is unable to turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles so we may know them by their limping.

A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist.

If you are real scared of this, go to a junk yard and try it on someone else's junk. At least you won't mess your stuff up, right?
You'll see it is real simple.

You might go to the carwash, & plug in a few quarters to blow the grime off the bottom of the truck & trans, just to keep things clean while the trans is open. But its not a bad job to do.......crazyL
