Oops, busted by the air cleaner Police. I'll be and sure to pick up a new element this weekend Officer.
Mine is a 14 inch but I do believe that it is pretty dirty at the moment. |

With no air cleaner I'd say you must not be too fond of your engine...

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
I guess he`s saying that in many pictures of motors he has noticed a significant amount of undersized and/or dirty air filters and feels that needs to brought up.I agree 100% with the point he made.Engines are air pumps that run on combustion created by adding a small amount of fuel to the air.I wonder how many gallons of air per mile we use.
There`s a formula that determines the cubic area of an air cleaner for a given displacement.Going bigger is never a bad thing.Dirt reduces the effective cubic dimension and we all know that a dirty filter kills power as well as fuel economy. It`s a cheap part to replace and is the single best way to assure optimum fuel economy, providing timing and carb are set correctly.I think that`s the only point he was trying to make.

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
Of course. If it's metal and I can fit it into my oven, I coat it. I even powdercoated my last IPOD and my keychain. I bring stuff home off of my firetruck and coat it too. Sure makes the other engine companies jealous.

I just did mine on a whim. I've always just run a single snorkel stocker on my mild engines with no complaint. Since my engine has a Corvette theme, I went with the extra snorkel simply to make it look a bit Vett-ish. Plus, I'm louvering the hell out of my hood, so I needed protection from water. Compromises...

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
Dont get me wrong i love the whole snorkle thing and TWO thats just sick!!! But i thought that by removing the whole stock air cleaner and going with even a small open sided cleaner you would get more air? If this is not the case i would like to get in line for a double snorkle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
Interesting thread, and it's certainly nothing new. I recall seeing pics in magazines when I was a kid (a looooong time ago!) and there were magnificent-looking engines with oh-so-tiny air cleaners. Even though I wasn't old enough to drive, it just didn't seem right to me...

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
Here's a pic of my dual snorkel air cleaner.
It's a stock 65 SS set up I think? I liked it, so I went with it as well.

Re: I See So Many Great Motors with Small And ****ty Air Cleaners
Its been my experiance that the more cubic inch's the more air is needed to feed that thirst for air.
A few years back I was given one of those triangle edelbrock top air cleaners cuz I was told it would wake my 400 s/b right up and look good doing it. Well it looked good but it was easy to see the diference in the timeslips at the 1320. I had lost more than a second...thats huge. I started experimenting with diferent size air elements and honestly what I found is running the largest element that fit under a persons hood netted the best performance. Now I cant speak to gas milage as I hadnt tested for that. But I always either change out or clean my air element ever oil change depending on what Im running I.E KnN filters are reusable. I also find thats a good time to replace the fuel filter element, greese the suspention , clean the batterey terminals, and a few other things.
