Tranny Cooler?

OK I swapped in a 350/700R combo from an 84 burban that had a HD radiator. My question is what size of external aftermarket tranny cooler should I be looking into. Ive got a 66 short wide pretty much a cruiser got a 1 ton for towing duty so pullin a trailer wont be an issue. Thanks in advance!

Go to Jeggs or Summit Racing and check out what they offer in trans coolers. Usually rated in GVW.

I used a B&M stacked plate type with some huge GVW. I think it was 20K. I figured it would be enough if I got the biggest one.

Hows it workin out for you Protrash? I just have concerns about the 700R cooling from what Ive read its the number 1 killer errr cooling that is.....

So far fine, but its complete overkill and I dont drive much. The killer of the 700r4 is the TV cable. Add a temp guage to monitor your trans. I will be adding gauges to both trucks someday. I've read the same info and I think they recommend staying under 250*? Going by memory on that, so dont beat me.

Be aware that you can get a tranny cooler that keeps the fluid too cool which results in shift problems.

My only advice is to get one with minimum 3/8" (preferably 1/2") hose connectors. Years ago I had a stock 350 Chevy crate motor with a stock 350 auto with shift kit, and the external trans cooler generated so much pressure it ballooned the torque coverter, which in turn pushed the crank forward and wiped out my block. It was a very expensive learning experience.

I don't actually remember what size the fitters were but looking at the current models they were probably 11/32" which is just bigger than 5/16".

What was said about over cooling is true, however I have the big cooler (20,000 GVW) on my Suburban and have had no issues......been lucky. If you are going to run just an external cooler, consider plumbing in a thermostatic control valve, like THIS one. This will help the tranny get up to operating temperature.

Old thread, but good suggestion regarding the control valve.
That was my concern regarding cold NW days.
I wondered about putting the cooler behind the radiator for the warmer air.

I use an external linear dual pass cooler on the frame rail on the 50 Burb with the 700r4. It has the OE style brass radiator still and I didn't want to ditch it. The 700r4 will not shift into 4th gear until the fluid gets to operating temp through an internal temp sensor and protects it. It shifts fine when cold through 3 gears until 10 miles then 4th comes in. 25,000 and still doing well. I haul a 20 foot 1960 travel trailer every weekend in the summer and the linear cooler does a great job. Also have been in hot stop and go cruises with no boil over. I recommend the thermostat system, have had them on past rigs, but never got around to installing one on the burb. The 65 with a 700r4 runs through a newer radiator with the trans cooler integrated into it and hard lined to the trans. Planning on a B&M or Hayden stacked style cooler air to oil on the front of the radiator mounted on its own bracket. The pull zip pads they give you in the kit can work loose and cause radiator issues over time.

Just got it installed, but haven't ran the truck yet.
It's supposed to restrict flow until it reaches the best operating temperature.
