700 tranny?

if i put a 700 tranny in my truck how will it run?
im planning on a shift kit and a new stall!
i have a 350 small block with a 465 cam lift!

My understanding is that you need to beef up the 700r4 a bunch to run it in these old trucks, but if you build it right, it's really nice because it has a lower 1st gear and overdrive. My brother just put one in his 63 chevy and he loves it.

Ask around here and the guys will point you in the right direction.

I have one in my '78 Malibu and abuse it daily My Dad also has one in his '71 SWB. It's held up fine. However, you would not want to get a junkyard one and expaect it to survive. Dad got his from Chance Performance out of Wichita, KS and I got mine form Phoenix Transmissions out of Weatherford, TX. I got the ST model and it's rated up to 500hp. It might be worth the trip for you to pick it up. The real key to a 700r-4 is in the TV cable setup. Just make sure you get the right carb linkage kit and set it up like the directions say to. Phoenix can set you up will all of that.

It really depends on what gear you have now 3.73 with a 28" tire or shorter youll be good but taller and it will want to hunt between od and drive. I put on in my 65 out of a 91 1500 truck and put a 2500 convertor,sonnex servos,corvette gov and I love it but I have a 3.73 and 26" tire. I can cruise 75 no problems at around 2200. If you have a taller gear 3.73 or higher numerically you'll love it. I would recomend going through it if you plan on beating on it. Here's some upgrades to look for...
Beast sunshell,upgraded servos,hardened pump rings and a 10 vein pump. Don't go with a 13 vein pump because its actually weaker than the 10 and also go for an updated clutch pack with more clutches 9 instead of 7. Look for a 91-93 models they a re heaver and have a one piece valve body and if you really want to be safe get a constant pressure VB from tci that way theres no question about pressure from tv cable. Mine has stock internals now but I dont beat on it too bad but do your research on shift kits before you buy....Oh yea and get a lock up kit also. I have some extra parts if your interested I want gone.

I run one in my truck, love it for the low 1st gear and the OD for the freeway. I do however want to go to a 3.73 gear when my 3.42's wear out.

Just that little bit of RPM increase would raise it enough to make the engine happier at speed.

Go for it, great addition to anyone who drives thier truck alot like I do.

20 inch tall tire, do you mean a 20" wheel? And your gear is your ring and pinion in the rear end, what ratio is it.

Like the other guys said if it is built right it will hold up fine. I beat up on mine daily with 373 gears and 32in tires do alot of interstate driving. just make sure tv cable is right shifting late is not as bad as shifting early.

What do you mean by performance? With a shift kit and higher stall converter it will take off fast and bang shifts, but if you're looking for it to last you need to do some more upgrades like shortbed70 mentioned. It won't last very many hard launches if you don't. If you're just cruising around though it may be fine. I put a stock used 700R4 in a truck with an anemic 305 and never rode it hard, worked great. Like the OP said, the TV cable set-up is CRITICAL.

By the way you don't need an expensive TV kit, the only specialized part you need is the carb linkage which can be had from Phoenix trans for around $30. It will correct the geometry and make sure the trans maintains correct pressure. Get a new TV cable from the dealership or parts store (use pre-87 silverado w/700R4) and a dual throttle/TV bracket from summit or wherever.

Same with the lock-up kit. Don't need to spend a mint here as long as your trans has the internal wiring, which almost all do. I have about $5 in both of mine and they are factory-like setups. Get a brake cancel switch and vacuum switch from the junkyard or parts store and wire switched 12V through them to pin A on the trans.

Which 350 do you have, short or long tail? If short, you will have to cut 3" from the d-shaft. If long, then I don't think you have to do anything.

I just picked up my 700r4 core today for a rebuild.
I have been following this thread and reading a lot of different stuff.From bowtie overdrives to raptor transmissions to phoenix transmissions.All seem to have a lot of interesting yet different things to say.
So it is my OPINION that a good quality rebuild kit,upgrade servos,3-4 clutch pack upgrade as well as the boost valve will do a good rebuild for a stock unit.If you run a reasonable hp engine that should be fine with a stock converter.If you are running a high hp engine then all bets are off.I have been researching a nice reliable built 700r4 for light towing and normal driving.I also see you would be well advised to replace the tv cable as they are very cheap and very dependent on if the transmission lasts or not.
Does this sound right experts????

I really don't know.I am new to this too.
I simply wanted the best most economical way to have 4th gear.
700r4 I believe is the answer.

If your wanting a pretty realible trans that can handle some abuse. Then go with the th350, its not an overdrive though, If you want to really throw the punches at it, get a th400.
And if you want to throw some major punches, find a powerglide, and have it built.

A 700 in good shape with a stage 2 shift kit can handle the power of a nicely build 283-383.

If you plan on pushing more than 600 horses at your transmission then you may want to get a tougher one. The 700's are a decent transmission that will hold up if you take care of them. My 700 handles great!
