Crew cab long to short bed

I'm in the process of tearing down my 89 GMC crew to make it a short box. I just need to verify where and how much to shorten the frame.

6" behind the cab mount, 14" between the cab and spring hanger.

5-6" at the very end of the frame.

You should try to PM Cochino. He built a 79 not too long ago.

Re: Crew cab long to short bed

I did some more checking and measuring today, and looks like 14" will be perfect. I just don't want to tell them how much to cut and have it be wrong....

How much did you end up taking out of the frame? I'm toying with idea to do a Crew short bed myself. The more info the better....or not, I need another project like I need a kick in the beans.

Re: Crew cab long to short bed

Haven't done it yet, but 14" should be ideal.

I took all the front suspension crap out, ready for the 4wd stuff. want to get that done before I start on shortening the frame.

yea same here. i measured 6 inches away from the cab. then 14 inches, cut out the 14inches, made gussets out of the 14 inch section i cut out. the moved the rear cross member up the next set of holes and cut 6 inches off the back.

Re: Crew cab long to short bed

by the way make sure everything is exactly square befor you weld it in place, if its off the line on the body right under your dorr handle wont line up where the cab end and the bed starts. it happened to me and it looked like my chassis was bent down in the middle, its was horrible. but its fixed now. good luck man.

That's just what I'm gonna do. I have a short box to get accurate measurements from, and the 14" is right on the money. The 5-6" at the end of the frame ain't a biggy, gonna have to make something anyways for a bumper mount.
