Re: anyone running race seats

yes i run some. i had these in my daily 85' chevy truck. (not the exact brand in the pic, but the exact style) they were o.k. but not as relaxing like a normal bucket or the orginal bench i had in there. i am putting these in my 71' 4x4 which will not be used as a daily, so i will be a little happier and safe since i can run the correct seat belt for the project. my only complaint was getting in and out over the high hip part all the time, i'm not a large guy (6'1 235lbs)the 85' sit stock hight, but it just kinda got old......i have a friend that is "heaftier" than i am and he hated them ......when i get home i will take some pics of how they are in the truck and post it up for you....

nvrsatisfied: Yeah definitely post some pics when you get home.

jamokey: How do you like the race seats? They look really good in your truck.

Did the seats move you forward any compared to the bench seat? I'm 6'3 so I dont want to get moved any closer to the dash if I can help it. Also did you have to fab your own mounts?

Re: anyone running race seats

ya they moved me a little bit more forward but not much. took a little to get use to cause i pulled out a set of 01' chevy silverado seats that i was o.k. with (had to change seats because of new direction with project), but i got use to the new buckets. i also have to sit up a little bit more straight, so no ganster leaning allowed. i would rather have seats like Jamokey if i was going to do a daily, the sides/hip part of his seats don't wrap around or look as high like mine do and they look a lot more comfortable....and tilt steering is nice .

my seat brackets were pretty simple. i put my seats on s-10 brackets so i could slide forward/back. put the seats in the truck and i had some 1" square tubing laying around, sat the seats on the tubing. got everything squared up and it felt fine. cut pieces about 3"-5" long and welded the 1" tubing to the floor, then took a grade 8 bolts/big washer threw the floor board and bolted them down.

Re: anyone running race seats

The seat does move you closer to the steering wheel, so if you want to be further back the seat needs to be more straight up like nvr said. THe other issue is that the upper part of the seat rubs against the cab which makes noise and may eventually damage the paint. But they look good and are pretty comfortable.

I did pretty much the same with mounting them, however my seats came mounted on a frame. I put it in the truck set it up with wood, measured it up then made a frame from 1" tube. I then bolt the whole thing through the floor, I didn't weld it.

Redo the bench, it's more fun with the wife/girlfriend/significant other.

Its funny that you say that because thats the one and only reason i'm considering re-doing my bench.

eseaton: what brand of seats are those and how do you like them? They look good in there.

My other reason for going with the race seats is because I'm thinking about mounting my nitrous bottle in between the seats for easy access.

theirs way too many nice bench seats out of newer trucks to list for this project. i have 98 r*m seats, a friend with a 68 took out his buddy buckets for a f@rd bench seat, and another friend running a late 80's gm bench. i really like my ram seats with the fold down center with a ton of storage and the seats actually hold you where youre supposed to sit when you go around a corner.
i do have 1 friend with racing seats in his truck. they are uncomfortable and a pita.
theirs no way id give up the benifits of a good bench seat for well anything.

Re: anyone running race seats

They are jdm racing seats i bought on ebay. I think I paid $225 shipped with sliders. They fit the truck well and are dang comfy, the only downfall is that I had to build my own seat frames. They are also fully reclinable, the console was built once I got them installed.

Re: anyone running race seats

Thanks for the pics! They help a ton. Especially the pics of the seat mounts.

I can see what you mean by the seat bottoms having the raised part. Looks like it would be a pain to get in and out after awhile.
