Convert or Stay with an automatic

SO i got the opertunity to pick up a rebuilt Sm465 and a ORd twinsticked np205. Comes with everything but the clutch and hydro set up. For 250. This is going in my 77 K10 replacing the np203 and the th350. The truck sees mostly steet and trail time. Not much mud or rock.

Just wanted some feedback on this setup. I know these have a Low crawling gear. Will my factory rear shaft work?? Would a Blazer 205 shaft work? Thanks

First that sounds like an awesome price.
Pretty sure you will have to change the length of your drivlines.

I would do it, but I hate autos. I love wheeling with my 465/205 combo

Re: Convert or Stay with an automatic

sounds like such a solid setup.. I am in love with twin sticked 205's and match it with the low 1st gear of the 465... unstoppable (and for rockcrawlers, very desired) combo. Im not sure Id waist the effort for a rig that doesnt see much crawl or mud.. the 205 would be an upgrade, but how would you benifit from the 465? I have no answer as far as output shafts.. sorry.

Re: Convert or Stay with an automatic

I would like to see the answer because my uncle was saying how i would want to swap my sm465 for a th350 or th400, because if i'm going up a muddy hill and it stalls it would be much harder to get up the hill and my life could be on the line, going off the side. But, he also said that it would be great for crawling, and good going up rocks.

Re: Convert or Stay with an automatic

I'd do a NV4500/NP203/205 doubler.

Re: Convert or Stay with an automatic

an nv4500/203/205 combo would be kick ass, but price wise, its outta reach for a lot of people unless you found one for a steal.

i converted from a th350/203 to a sm465/205 in a 70 longhorn and 71 jimmy, both daily drivers.i had to change the 70srear and front drive shafts cuz this set up did shorten up the drive train by about 6-8 inches i believe.

as far as a clutch i would highly recommend a hydro set up. less hassle and sometimes (depending on the driver) less chance that you can stall. i have a hydro set up in an 87 s15 (not saying there the same) but its soo much easier than the mechanical set up int my older trucks. and for street ability, i thing this set up is great. regardless if it'll see tons of off road action.

Re: Convert or Stay with an automatic

Well let me say that the truck really only gets driven to the trails and offroaded or is used for any kinda truck duties we need. IT is not a daily driver. So far the np203 has been great but I hate auto trans. Gonna go check it out tomorrow. It is a 10 spline output sm465. While we don't do "rock crawling" trails around here require the use of low alot and are real titght.

I might not need it but for the price I am having a hard time passing it up!

A doubler could be in the future but that is alotta cash!!

if you're that worried about stalling, install a manual throttle if your truck doesn't have one. they make offroading a manual transmission way better.

im a total control freak, so!
i use the sm465, and my truck does most days ont eh street
and when i go mudding it's definatley beautiful.. because i can control the roostertails and all aspects of my mudding experience..

and on the street. i do like to downshift to scare small cars tailgaiting me..
totally freaking worth it to me
