axle length question

I ususally hang out on the 67-72 board but I have a question about axle lengths. I plan on putting a 12 bolt from an 81 GMC into my 69 and want to keep the 6 lug pattern. I noticed that 2wd axles are 1/32 longer 31-5/16 vs 31-9/32 for 4wd 6 lug. Will this make a difference? and are the axle housings different between 1/2 2wd and 4wd?

I have the pads to weld on the axle housing but not sure about the insides. Just want to make sure I am not dropping $$ into something that won't work.

Thanks for any info.

Re: axle length question

As long as the spline count is the same, I can't see where .03125" is going to matter.

And, you may have just been using the same type of stretchable tape measure that I used the other night!

Re: axle length question

Thanks. Didn't think it would make a difference but when I went to order they showed different lengths.
I can relate to the stretchable tape, I have issue whether I am looking at it upside down or sideways

Re: axle length question

12 bolt 4WD axles will interchange with the 2WD ones. Just grab the drums, too.
