Help with my 72 Jimmy

My Jimmy rides well, like a truck. It is 4X4 and all leafs and really rides rough. It doesn't help that the roads around here suck. Any suggestions on how to improve the ride? I am even considering converting to 2 wheel drive and coil springs?

I am open to any and all suggestions and criticisms. I would also like to know what each idea/method would cost?

Here is the Jimmy for those that have not seen it.

Well you could sell it to me and buy a late model cushy riding truck. Then we would both be tickled.

Serriously, the firs thing I would consider is looking at the shocks. Determine if they are too stiff causing a rough ride, or too soft allowing the suspension to bottom out.

Re: Help with my 72 Jimmy

that's a really nice truck... don't make it a 2WD!

If you are that serious about the ride then you can do a lot of things. Custom springs, new shocks (as stated), different tires, better seats, you name it... how nice do you want it to ride, it's a 40 year old truck?

You can even get crazy enough to add a front and rear 4 link system with coilover shocks like a monster truck.

Re: Help with my 72 Jimmy

Everything is for sale? I would look for a nice 72 2 wheel drive then.

The shocks are old but functioning and not leaking.

The reason I put this out there is I would like to hear lots of opinions. I would hate to spend money on new shocks and alcan springs only to wish I had spent the money on a coil sprind suspension or regret going that route?

It is really not bad on the better roads but most of the roads are horrible. They must have a deal with the suspension shops in the state!

Alcans & Bilstein 5100 series shocks for the win!!

Even a set of stock height & travel replacements would make a marked improvement for you.

Later,
Buddy

Re: Help with my 72 Jimmy

the shocks could be out of fluid so you don't see any, but if you want to convert it, i would think selling it an buying a 2wd thats already done would be cheaper.

Shocks could be about 200 for some good ones
A 4link front/rear 2000 for coilovers, 1200 for heims, about 7-10 a foot of dom guessing 40ft

note: on the list you do mthe math then x by 15 to 20 % because thats dealers cost

FOx coilovers hybrids 17.35 t 276.25
top spring for 2.0s 90
bottom springs for 2.0 60
fox coilover 2.5s 16in travel 4 340
springs for 2.5s 8 90

converting would be around 400 done by getting a used 2wd front setup and leaving the t case, rear, the same.
