Wow

Well, I ordered some parts from CPP the other day and I got the shipment notification last night. I couldn't believe how much they said that stuff weighs! I know these parts are really heavy, but geez I think their scale is off or something.. What do ya'll think? Here's the list of parts and weights.

I ordered:
1 pair of 6-lug disc brake rotors
1 pair of 3" drop front coil springs
1 set of wheel bearings and seals

They shipped in 3 boxes weighing 87 lbs., 59 lbs., and 28 lbs.

Re: Wow

first off they dont charge on actual weight they have a set fee that is not unreasonable.
SO them not having an accurate scale only screws them. Im sure that is not the case.

seems very reasonable to me.

Re: Wow

Maybe the shipping company figures weight by the SIZE of the box??? Just a thought. I am not saying it makes the most sense.

Re: Wow

I'd say the numbers were printed incorrectly on the shipment, but hey a few freebies won't hurt.

Let us know how the shipment/transaction turns out.

Re: Wow

I think R.L. has figured it out. I went back and looked at the tracking info and it says "multiple packages: 2" so if it's 2 boxes that would make sense. Nice job R.L.!

Re: Wow

I would pay very close attention on what you were charged for: The actual weight of the packages you received or the excessive weight they stated. If it's the first it's OK but if it's the latter then somebody's padding the shipping charges which I'm pretty sure is fraud.

Re: Wow

You can not go strictly buy the gross weight of an item
The tailgate is a perfect example.
All common carriers have height x width x length restrictions - IF you exceed those they had on an extra fee which is calculated by weight - ie - a package that can not exceed 162 inches HxWxL combined but measure 178 inches would have an over size fee put onto the package of maybe 20 extra pounds - it is the easiest way for carriers to charge additional fees for oversize packages.
Oversize packages can include weights that are to heavy being assessed an additional fee also.
Trust me I deal with freight issues every day freight is an expensive part of doing business
When I bought all may front end parts from ECE my UPS bill was $120 bucks

Re: Wow

I don't really think I was overcharged.. I know the parts are heavy and I knew that before I ordered them. I was just thrown off when I saw 3 boxes so heavy, but have now realized its only 2 boxes.. One of which weighs 59 lbs and the other 28 lbs for a total of 87 lbs. So I think its all cool. I'm gonna double check when I get it in but I'm pretty sure everything is in order.

I'd have to agree with the oversize thing.
for ups they measure the length + the girth of the box, if it's over 130" they consider it oversize1 (I think over 192" is oversize2).
The minimum charge for an oversize 1 package is 90# even if it only weighs 22#!!!
I've shipped a number of large bulky lightweight things, and man does it cost a pretty penny...
It's the same with LTL or full load freight. big bulky lightweight things really hurt them, they'd much rather fill up to the load rating of the truck...

years ago we sold foam wedge inclines(for propping you up on your bed etc) to mail order companies. We worked out a great deal with a trucking line. they hauled Steel sheet and rod, they would come close to filling their load weight and would only fill 10-20% of the cubage of the truck. they would fill the rest of the truck with the foam inclines, it saved a ton of money compared to shipping the foam on our own.

but anyways I don't think they are padding the shipping charges much if at all. I bet the coils are well packed in the heavier box, the packing prolly weighs 4-8#, and then the rotors, bearings, and seals in the smaller box, which is prolly a good 3-6# on it's own.

R.L. is on it with the super math skills, I didn't even think of that when I read the OP.

your pretty far out their to think shipping and handling padding is fraud!!!

not to mention that on big items UPS charges as well as fedex a fee on box size not just weight.....

fraud? come on

Re: Wow

^ I agree - that's the handling part of shipping and handling. shipping should be freight/shipping costs only. handling is the box, any filler(kraft paper, foam peanuts etc), tape, labels, and the labor time paid for someone to put it all together...

Re: Wow

First of all I think we figured it out. It`s twp packages adding up to 87#,not three packages totally 204#.But,over size is one thing and weight is another.when a shipper charges by weight and dimension they still go by actually weight and combine it with the charge based of dimension.

Sorry if I didn't express myself more clearly. Awhile back when I was doing a bunch of E-bay stuff there were some people charging some real excessive shipping charges for their items. Many complaints were submitted to E-bay by other members and those people were either chastised or kicked out. I am very aware of the size charge thing as I just bought an inner front fender for my truck. The price of the inner fender was $89.00 and I paid $120.00 for shipping. When it arrived, I understood. The box was HUGE! It only weighed about 50LBS. The coil springs, rotors and wheel bearings that Nsuengineer06 had ordered would not require an inordinately large box or boxes. Like 1968SWBBIGBLOCK I have in the past worked as a professional shipper so I have some small experience with this. I never said that CPP was defrauding him, but I was recommending him to make sure that things all added up. Sorry if I pissed anybody off as I was just expressing my concern.
