Help a girl out
I've recently purchased a '67 GMC half-ton pickup. The shift lever broke off near the base (previous owner had welded it on). This is a three-speed column-mounted shifter, of course.
I have three options: weld it back on, buy a shifter kit and install it on the floor, or find an affordable steering column. I would prefer the latter, but I'm having a hard time finding the part! Any suggestions? |

welcome to the board and Kool screen name
are you going for the stock look?? I would hit the local yard sales find me one of those BIG wrenchs and weld it on the stub with the closed end out..... they also look cool as a floor shifter |

You can also put a WTB ad in Craigslist with what you are looking for.

Re: Help a girl out! Trouble finding a used steering column
Yes, lets keep it from being a WTB thread. Someone might be able to point you in the right direction if we knew exactly what broke. Was it the collar or the lever? Pics? You know, we love pics here.
BTW, I highly recommend becoming a supporter. This board is one of the best sources of info on these trucks or even in general that I have found. Last edited by 71tahoe; 09-16-2009 at 04:53 PM. |

Re: Help a girl out! Trouble finding a used steering column
Welcome!!
As Jamie has already said, if you hit the subscribe button at the top of the page and pay the $25 to become a member your name will change to blue and that will entitle you to post "want to buy" or "for sale" adds in the parts for sale forum...which can also be found the top of the page. You will then need to post this type of question there as a "WTB" there are always great deals to be had there and no end of parts for sale. And how about posting up some pics of your truck and the offending column, we would all love to see it.

Re: Help a girl out! Trouble finding a used steering column
A used low priced non-tilt auto trans column should be easy to find on CL, Ebay, local pick a part, used parts vendors that likely advertise on CL, etc.

Well - welcome to the board, usually have some useful advice on here but seems that has gotten sidetracked. Anyway for now, check the parts board and see if anyone has a column listed. If you find one, check the FAQ section for threads from me, I have a procedure to adjust a 3 speed column so it works perfect again.

Re: Help a girl out! Trouble finding a used steering column
Welcome to this site.I don`t know what`s going on with so many members in this thread.I agree with our moderator that this request for help skirts the WTB rule dangerously close. You don`t need to outright ask for people to start offering a part,at which point "they" have turned this into a WTB thread on "you".I also see why he felt you that warning you in a friendly way was all that was necessary, since it`s your very first post.
What I don`t understand is why all these members have decided to disregard other rules and hijack from the subject matter,comment/question a moderator, and generally act in an unacceptable manner that we are all aware of,whether they read the rules (which I think most most haven`t) or not. This type of behavior will run a newly signed on member off quicker than a mild warning from a moderator.I would lock this thread down, but I hope my comments will serve to put this thread back on track and stop this poor behavior.I`d be turned off and consider not returning if my first post on a site got locked over a simple question. It`s my opinion that some of these replies call for an infraction. We`ll see how the other staff members feel.I`m holding back because I feel it has something to do with the name of the new member and the fact that this is a predominantly male website.Let`s get our heads back on straight and carry on now.Don`t muff up a good website with this garbage anymore, please.

Thread cleaned up as much as possible..
Welcome to the site horsepower_and_heels. Please do not take these posts the wrong way. You have bunches of folks whom are willing to advise you and give you a hand. They just want to be sure you are aware of the rules as well. If you get email notifications, I am sure you read the posts that had been deleted like what in the world... For that I apologize. Please do not let this change your opinion of the site and what it has to offer you. The rest of you.. keep on track, be nice... nuff said |

Re: Help a girl out
welcome to the board heels... what kind of fix up/build are you looking to do? If you plan on going with an automatic later on down the road, then it may be a good time to get the auto column now and just get a floor shifter for the time being.

Is this a 3 speed manual or automatic? Sounds like a 3-on-the-tree. There's tons of members in WA and, I'm sure, many of us would be glad to help you get your truck shifting again...without buying a bunch of parts. Where are you in Washington? BTW--there's also gals on this board.. .

Re: Help a girl out
Oh, man- I should have worded my original post differently, I'm sorry about that. It honestly wasn't my intention to ask for any to buy here... but thanks so much for the advice and the sites to check out, I really appreciate it!
Also, thanks for the "welcomes" on here, nice to find an online community of 67-72 gmc and chevy enthusiasts. I think I've got some great resource recommendations (possibly enough to answer my question), but I'd be happy to start a new thread over. Let me know. --K |
