Headers on a 4x4
Just installed a new set of JEGS headers on my 70 CST 4x4. They were a little different from the old Headman headers that I took off.
One problem I had was with the #2 spark plug on the drivers side, too close to the pipe. After some heating and bending I gained a liitle more clearance. The second problem I had was having to bend the z bar for the clutch because the #3 header tube was dead center, again a little heat and a little bending did the trick. No problems on the passenger side. The rest of the exhaust will be installed by a local shop with flowmaster muffs. Has anybody dealt with bad fitting headers? Any tips would help. Thanks. |

Hedman Hedders specifies different headers depending on where your clutch cross shaft is located. I found this out when I bought headers for my truck which has a manual transmission. I told them where it was and when I got the headers installed they fit perfectly.

I even called JEGS on the phone to tell them what I had,4x4 ,man. trans. and they said they would fit. Minimum wage work for minimum wage workers I guess. Anyway I think they will work for now, only time will tell, but I will definatelly go back to Headmans on my next project. The Headmans I took off had the #1 tube crossing over the top of 2&3, tons of room.

I just put Hooker Competion headers on my Jimmy and they fit great. I have an automatic and had to bend the shift bar from the column a bit so it wouldn't rub. No sparkplug problems. They also tuck up in the frame pretty good.

Good headers ordered for the specific application should require no modifications IMO.
When I ran headers on my K20 burb, I ran Hooker Super Comps and had to do ZERO modifications. In fact they slipped right in with no hassles what so ever.

The Hedman #69230's are supposed to fit the 4x4's really well. I have a set, but haven't installed them yet. Preliminary fitup to the engine looks good. Clearance for the clutch bellcrank, and good plug access, no passenger side shackle interference, and they don't drop down too low. Yea I gotta agree when I buy a good set of headers I want them to fit with out having to do any modifications. I have ran Hooker comp headers and had headmen headers on a rig or 2 and have loved them no major issues plugs are easy and doing a motor swap and putting them back in has been a cake walk!
