44 Series Flowmaster

Ok guys I just finished installing my Hooker Competition headers on my 77 C10. It has a bone stock 350. I`m gonna install some 44 series tomorrow or saturday but was wondering what size piping I should go with? I pretty much yanked out the old exhaust and am running open headers as of right now so I`m starting from the headers back. I want them dumped before the axle and no cats. Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

pure dual exhaust on an average engine?

2" or 2.25" max i'd say... go much larger and you'll lose backpressure...

BTW, i'm no exhaust expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once...

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

i wouldnt go smaller then 2 1/4 and no bigger then 3 inch. especially on a stock motor. i have 2 1/2 inch pipe on mine and its a little more then stock and it sounds and performs great. i have longtubes into cherry bombs and they dump before the axle

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

I have 2 1/2 on mine, sounds and runs good.

I highly suggest 2 1/2. I think 2" sounds "forced" or "poppy", I think 3" is just..too much for a stock engine.

Either way, tell us what you go with.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

Ok guys I ran into a little problem while taking off my exhaust manifold on the driver side. I accidentally hit the dipstick with the manifold and it broke off at the block...what to do??? The end piece of the tube is still stuck in the block.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

Avoid the flowcrappers and get a good dynomax ultraflow , or magnaflow mufflers, Much better mufflers for the price, and use 2 1/2 inch pipe, the whole "engine needs backpressure " is a myth. you DONT want backpressure.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

I remember a magazine article where they tested several mufflers on a mustang and the open style only made 2-3 more peak HP/TQ than the Flowmaster.

Now if you take a 400HP motor and try to push all the exhaust through one 40 series, I could see where it would be a restriction. If you use two in a true dual setup and include and H or an X pipe, there should be no problem as far as exhaust restriction.

Might not be the best, but man they sure sound cool, especially with long tube headers and no catalytic converters. It's totally different than what brand new trucks with Flowmasters sound like.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

By the way I ended up going with the 40 series flowmasters, Hooker Super Comp Headers and true dual dumped before the axle with 2.5 piping. Sounds and performs really nice. Took out alot of restrictions with that old OEM setup. I still have to take out my smogpum and adjust my timing. All in all very satisfied with the result. Now if only I could take out that broken off oil dipstick tube thats stuck in my block hahaha.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

I have a 90 Jimmy with what I believe to be the 260hp GM crate motor,I don't know for sure because the po did the swap.I have Hooker Comp headers,3"" exhaust, and true duals with no cat's that dump before the axles.I only have one complaint and that's the odor I get when the back window is down.

Re: 44 Series Flowmaster

I run Dynomax long tube headers with 2.5 duals into 40 series flowmasters dumped in front of the rear tires.Love the sound.

As for your dipstick problem,i have had luck using a small slide hammer once the hole has been tapped out.
