custom wood bed storage

Has anyone did a custom wood bed with wooden storage compartments? I will be boxing in the wheel tubs on both sides in maple to match the wood bed. I will use this storage to hide the battery box and also hide my chairs and cooler when going to shows. any ideas or pics of something different would be great.

Instead of going over the wheel wells could you make one whole board hinge up or over, and then build a storage compartment under it? Or even two boards could hinge over to give you a bigger compartment.

If access is from the top and you don`t want the boxes inside of the wheelhouses more than the thickness of the material,it will be a very small opening.i`ve built boxes and accessed then through the sides, inside the bed.
