Mounting the original radio (or half of it)

I just finished installing a Classic Auto Air "perfect fit" system in my truck. I also just bought an original radio and don't need it to work, I just need it to look pretty. There are all sorts of hoses and ducts running around up there due to the A/C install, and trying to get the whole beast to fit seems a much more daunting task than it needs to be.
Is there a way to strip the radio down to its knobs and faceplate and make it mountable? I am mounting a cigarette lighter 12V outlet into the new, reduced sized plastic glove box, and just use my iPod and a power amp for tunes.
I just figured I would check, since I am probably not the first person who wanted to do this.

I'm sure you could rig something up, but you'd have to cut and paste things pretty good to get the faceplate, buttons and knobs to look normal. I take it you don't want to go with a radio delete plate?

Negative on the delete plate. I like the way the old radio looks. I figured if someone has had one of these apart, it could take some of the guess work out of it. I can't believe how big and heavy it is for just an am radio. Everything is so small these days...

Here is what I was able to remove from the original radio.


Check out that circuit board. It looks homemade. The resistors are the size of entire chips nowadays.



I got it down to a manageable size and the right knob will still move the dial! I just have a few bits left to trim and then I will take it back apart and clean/polish it up and repaint anything that needs it. (the red indicator and black backing). I will need a mount for a lightbulb and that should do it!



Up next, setting up the Ipod stuff in the glove box.
