Feeling dense...
How in the ding dong do you get the lower ball joints out of 77 LCAs?
Mostly -- which direction do you press them? Seems like it should be simple, but I'm not making any progress.

1-soak in pb blaster
2-get pickle fork and biggest sledge you own 3-i have some 5 ft prybar, it helped alot 4-if you have a torch, and these balljoints wont be needed again, go for it lol A combo of these did the trick for me (except for the torch, i dont own one)

Re: Feeling dense...
a pickle fork nor a torch will do much of anything for you when it come to removing ball joints from the lower control arms.
you will need to press them out ... press from the top of the lca as if you are pushing the ball joint out the bottom of the lca. In other words, with the lca in it's normal orientation, press DOWN. Last edited by Shane; 11-13-2009 at 06:43 PM. |

Re: Feeling dense...
I just use a 5lb sledge and a couple good blows will knock'em out.

Re: Feeling dense...
I used to just go to the parts store and rent the puller and then get the cash back once i returned it, (before i bought one) that way you don't F things up with a big hammer, too much heat or kill someone with the pickle fork idea... just a thought.

Re: Feeling dense...
I did the same thing on my tahoe. rented the tool and it made it a breeze. its basically a big ass c clamp and a little piece of pipe that presses it out. was a whole lot easier than the hammer

Re: Feeling dense...
Got the first one out.. had to cobble up an extra large receiving gup out of a large hole saw and a puller plate because my bearing press didn't have a large enough cup for these.

Re: Feeling dense...
Guys, he's asking about pressing them out of the lower control arm ... NOT separating them from the spindle.

Re: Feeling dense...
I've always used a sledge to pop them out of the arm. This method of BJ removal has nothing to do with seperating from the spindle. Don't need any fancy tool or press.
