71 engine pulley help needed
I posted this in the engine forum and haven't had any response. My truck is a 71 C10 2wd, auto trans , and originally had a 307. I recently replaced the 305 that had replaced the 307, with a 350 out of an 85 suburban. Today I started putting the pulleys from the 305 on the 350 and I believe I ran into a clearance issue between the harmonic balancer and the water pump pulley. There doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the two. Now, the harmonic balancer on the 350 is an 8 inch compared to the original 6 inch balancer. What are my options ,so things will run corectly? Are there different diameter water pump pulleys that will work? shoot me some input , I sure would appreciate it.

Re: 71 engine pulley help needed
Your balancer is behind your water pump pulley. If it's hitting I'm thinking you have too much dish (possibly a long water pump pulley on a short water pump?
Here's a picture when I was ironing out my pulley problems. Hope this helps. s/t

You can't get a main pulley groove any further back than the face of the balancer. Either you have a mixed set of pulleys that just happened to work for the 305 or the balancer isn't seated all the way.

I think I have the wrong water pump pulleys, someone has told me the two I have are for LWP, with and without air. The search is on for the correct pulley.

Re: 71 engine pulley help needed
Why don't you give a guy in Arizona named Jim Berther a call and explain what you have. I have used his expertise a couple of times and he instantly could fix me up with the right pulley. He sells on ebay and his ebay seller name is gotpulley. He lists his telephone number in his ebay listings so I am not violating his privacy by providing it to you - 602-751-0454. I am not related to him and have no personal interest in his sales - I'm just sharing a contact who has helped me and who was a straight shooter to deal with.
