Tell me what you think
I really wanted a cowl hood for my Longhorn but I couldn't see spending the money right now since the truck does not run. So I put a hood scoop I had laying around on my hood. I'll have to put better primer on it later, and this is only with one light coat of filler. Tell me what you think.

Re: Tell me what you think
What was your procedure for doing this?? I did this once with a hood on my old 72' 4x4 with a 3-4" fiberglass scoop. We riveted it to the existing hood and fiberglassed and bondo it, but it wound up cracking not to long after. Not much you can do when the hood vibrates as bad as these old hoods do. You can use the new adhesives that they make for fiberglass bonding which I hear great things about, but I don't think there will ever be a way to keep it from cracking around the edges. You are doing a good job, and I don't mean to be a debby downer, just sharing my luck. That and the overhang of your hood scoop, might interfere with opening the hood as it might hit the windshield when opening, but not sure. Trevor

Re: Tell me what you think
Thanks guys. Trevor, I thought about that and I guess I will cut it if needed. I used a valvoline brand 2 part epoxy/glue. I have used this stuff before and I love it. It works on bare metal, aluminum, and smc/fiberglass, and even bond metals to some wood. I used this on the firewall of my corvette and I know it sees lots of vibrations due to the basically solid engine mounts , the diesel, and the drag racing. No cracks anywhere where I used it. I used this on the front clip when I built it as well. This stuff works great. I have used another brand in the past and it liked to crack a lot. It was Lord Fuser brand.

Re: Tell me what you think
I think it is a 2 1/4" scoop. I will describe the process I did so you have an idea. I used 80 grit and sanded the area where the scoop will be. I primered this area. I put the scoop on the hood and trimmed the front to go over the rib of the hood. I then eye balled the scoop on the center of the hood because I couldn't measure this one because it was on a hood once before. Then I used 80 grit and cleaned the surface of the scoop. I reinstalled it on the hood, used self tapping screws and mounted the scoop. I marked the edges as well as the inner lip at the opening at the rear of the hood. I removed the scoop and sanded to bare metal with 80 grit again. I cleaned it all and then applied the epoxy on the scoop first. I laid the scoop on the hood and then screwed it down. Then I epoxied all the way around the scoop. I then used masking tape and put over the epoxied area to smooth it out. I let it set over night and then removed the tape and screws. I epoxied the screw holes shut and let them dry. Then I took a sanding block with 80 grit and sanded it to a contoured angle or smooth. I used bondo and beveled it back all the way around the scoop. I sanded it out with 80 grit and used spray bomb primer for now. I will have to go over the filler with a glazing putty when I put some real filler primer on it. I was happy with the way it turned out for my first real time doing this. The last time I attempted one of these I didn't get the scoop on correct because it too was used but I didn't notice the scoop was bent on one side causing it to be lob sided.

Re: Tell me what you think
Thanks. Go ahead and give it a try. Body shops do this all the time. I used to work in one when I went to college and this was common practice for this. I know it works better than fiberglassing one on. I've done that and it is a lot more work for sure getting the scoop to feather into the hood.

Re: Tell me what you think
Hood turned out really well, props for that. Used to work in a body shop myself, and now because of it...Im super anal about body work. Sometimes I think Im too anal about it. Love how the line matches up and blends in the middle. One thing I do notice....needs a bit more massaging/blending on the sides..at least on the left side. I can see the out line of the cowl through the primer and will only become more apparent with paint. But other wise superb job!! Is it, or will it become functional, or just aesthetics?

Re: Tell me what you think
Great fab work there! Not to be a buzzkill or anything, but have you test fit the hood. It looks like the cowl may come back far enough to contact the wiper cowl of your truck when raised.

Re: Tell me what you think
Thanks. No I haven't test fit it yet. I will cut it if needed once I get the hood on the truck. At the moment the whole front clip isn't on the truck so I couldn't test fit it. We shall see in a few days with any luck.

Re: Tell me what you think
That looks great, I really want a cowl hood but the shipping to the UK is a real killer so this may be the only way to go for me. Does anyone produce a steel scoop that could be welded on?

Re: Tell me what you think
I think those are cheaper than the summit ones too. The next one I do will more than likely be steel. Here are some pics of the hood on the truck. I don't have the hinges on yet because I was the only one around this morning. It's pretty hard to bolt one of these on by your self for sure. The rear part of the scoop is close, but it just might not hit the windshield when it opens up. I'll have to see later on.
