Quicker steering

I am about to rebuild the steering on my 72 Cheyenne Super. The steering has always felt like a bus to me. Is there an affordable direct bolt on steering box with a quicker ratio available? If so does it use a different pitman arm?

My 73 steering was much more responsive than my 72. I'd like to get it to at least that level of the 73 and if possible even more like the steering in my 07 Avalanche. I want to do it with bolt on parts. I don't want to modify anything that would make it hard to return to original if I decide to at a later date.

I tried a search but nothing turned up.

TIA,
Matt

We sell direct bolt on, "Redhead" remanufactured quick ratio steering gears that are a direct bolt on. They are $299.95 plus a $75.00 core charge. Here is a link: http://www.classicheartbeat.com/67-72_chassis_2.htm WES

Do you give up any turning radius with that gear? Deeper searching turned up guys using later model gears with a quicker ratio. What are the pros and cons of the redhead gear VS say a 79 gear?

Re: Quicker steering

No you do not. You just go from 4 1/2 turns lock to lock to 3 1/2 turns. The Redhead gear comes with warrantee and is completely remanufactured with larger bearings being used. The 79 gear would require you to purchase a new rag joint assembly, and if removed from a donor truck would probably need to be rebuilt anyway.
