1962 chevy 10 brake help.

I know it has been asked alot before but I can't find anything during search.

I have a 1962 10 chevy truck 2 wd. Completly restoring the truck and I am down to the brakes. I want to use the stock drum setup, but none of it is in good shape. Basically all i have good is the spindles. Where can you buy the whole brake setup, need brake booster everything... and is it worth it.

If the price is the same i guess i would upgrade to disc brakes. I get confused reading all the articles. Can anyone simplify all this for me. Thanks Guys --Jimmy--

In the FAQ's section

I just got done redoing the brakes all around on my '66. Got parts from NAPA and Advance Auto Parts. Am keeping the manual drum brakes for now, but will be switching to power drums in the future. Using a PB booster from a '72 and CaptainFab's bracket that he makes.

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

the wider drum brake parts from a '73-87 ish 4x4rear should fit, u need the whole assembly backing plate shoes drums etc but get an old backing plate from a wreckers or parts truck to make sure every thing clears first.

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

Here is basically what I don't know.

On the front axel where the brake shoes are. The plunger/valve that pushes the shoes against the drum... Can you replace it? I have new drums and shoes.

On the Firewall where you fill up with brake fluid, i guess the resevoir. Mine is rusted way to bad and lines are gone. I don't know what i need there, i guess i need the whole thing? (its hard to explain when ya don't know what things are called lol).

How does the brake petal connect and apply pressure to the brakes??

Try early classic enterprise, I bought brake kits from them in the past, they use good parts, and complete set-up conversions, they may be a bit pricer than others ,but use good products.

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

You should be able to get these parts from your local auto parts store. Depending on your area, you might have to go to Napa.

Those are called "wheel cylinders". I would suggest replacing the hoses while you're at it.

That is called the "master cylinder" The '60-'62's had a combination brake master cylinder and clutch master cylinder all in one unit. Since you're new to this you might consider investing in a repair manual for your truck. That will tell you a lot, plus have pics and illustrations.

How does the brake petal connect and apply pressure to the brakes??

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

just get you a shop manual for your truck..these old trucks are strange to someone who hasn't worked on them much, but they built stuff back then so the average joe could work on 'em, not like cars today!

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

Your FLAPS will have a single chamber master cylinder for your truck. Tell them what year and after they get up off the floor, they will check with the sage veteran behind the counter and he will know what you need.

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

If your truck is an original auto truck, then just get an original master for a '62 with an auto trans. They are available, I've seen them listed. I believe it is the same master as for a '63 truck with manual or auto. If you need more help just holler.

You can also try Rockauto.com
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php

My Advance Auto Parts will match their prices too. They just figure in the shipping- have saved alot of $$ that way on my '66.

Re: 1962 chevy 10 brake help.

Thanks I got all the parts and installed the shoes and drums tnite.

How tight should the drum be on the pads? It has an adjuster don't want them to tight.
