points to hei swap

Gotta 74 GMC C25 with a 454 and points want to swap to hei. Need some help on what to do with the wiring part of it.

Easy.

Find a fused IGNITION ON circuit on the fuse block, or an unfused circuit (and add an inline fuse), and run a wire from there to the IGN terminal on the HEI.

Done.

Just be sure to cap off the old wire(s) that went to the coil.

either that or pull the old wire out of the wire bundle and the plug and replace it with a new 12g wire.

you can get the terminals from a good parts place and they come out of the plug with just a pair of pliers.

You need to run a new full voltage power wire to the BATT terminal on the HEI that is ignition on power. The old points system has a resistance wire in it and has less than full voltage getting through it. The HEI needs as much voltage as you can give it. The more it has the better it works.

I have run a relay with the points trigger wire and given the HEI full battery voltage this way.

the cheapest (yet dependable) HEI is from skip white on Ebay. Most of them are $45 which is half price or better than most.

you also need new wires and open your plugs to .45 (so people say)

You don't have to change your plug gap but the HEI has the power to jump a larger plug gap than the points system did so it will be more efficient with a larger plug gap. I have run as high as .060" with a high output coil in the HEI.

I'd like to see some BSFC and power numbers from a dyno test with different plug gaps to know what the benefit really is.

Yeah for some reason factory gap spec for HEI in 75 in most cases is .60 thousandths.
