Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
I will include this in my build thread but thought some of you may be interested in what is needed to mate a 4L60 to the NP205 transfer case usually found in our trucks.
Here is my original adapter next to Advance adapters part number 50-5302 Which is part of 4L60205 You save about $90 buying the whole kit. Due to poor understanding by the Techs at advance adapters I bought the kit piecemeal Here you will see their 4 bolt to 6 bolt adapter part number 50-0405 will not fit on the stock adapter. This was in their instructionsbut nowhere on their site and none of their techs informed me of this even after numerous conversations? Here are a couple of pictures showing some of the differences. I do believe you could alter the stock adapter with a cut off wheel on a grinder as it seals against the first flat spot/shoulder and not anywhere on the part you would have to cut off. I figured aluminum would be easier to work with so I opted not to cut mine and sell it to offset the cost. Their adapter Stock adapter Now you will see even their adapter doesn't fit 100%. If you cut the flange off the stock adapter you would not have to deal with this. If you use theirs you will run into this. The VSS will not screw into the adapter due to this flange! So I made a modification

the 2 adapters together showing my modification
Here is the VSS installed The reluctor ring that triggers the VSS How it looks from the end before the TC adapter is installed And here is a thread where I discuss the different output shaft needed and the installation of the reluctor ring I start discussing it near the end of page 1 and onto page 2. THANKS! You have cleared up a lot of questions that I have been asking AA and NOT getting any answer to. It's strange that they have these two adapter together in a kit yet you have to modify the two to fit the VSS.
One question, both the adapters are aluminum, correct?

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Yes both are aluminum. I think the reason you have to modify is there are many different aplications for the different parts. If you wanted to use their transfer case adapter with a stock bearing supported coupler (no VSS) the modification I made would make that unuseable! In the instructions it says if you have the bearing supported adapter you will need theirs (its about what the savings are if you buy the whole kit instead of idividual pieces like I did) But I can't see why you just couldn't cut the 1/2 inch off the transmission end of the coupler and use it without the bearing? Other than the bearing area the outside diameter of the two couplers are the same. My coupler had slight grooves where the seals rode so I needed one anyway.
I really want to try and sell my original adapter or I would modify it to see if I can make it work. I like to Know, have the answers but I do believe it wouldn't be too bad.

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
I'm sure it's in one of these posts somewhere, but what did the overall length of the transmission and adapter come out to be? Basically the distance from the front of the bell housing to the rear of the adapter?

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Advance adapters says it ends up being the same as an older 700R4.
IT SAYS HERE A 700R4 is 23 3/8ths and a 4L60 is 21 3/4 With the adapter it is probably slightly longer than the 23 3/8ths? I never measured but I will next time I am at the garage. BTW it has run and moved under its own power. Still have lots to do but it is getting there!!

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Thanks, I'm concerned with the overall length including all the adapters. I think for you it's going to be 27 3/8" but I'm not sure. I'm having second thoughts about going ahead and using the 4L80e instead, for comparison it's length in this situation would be 30" exactly.

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
I don't think so. I would check out advance adapters. I believe there is a solution to mate the 4L80 to the NP 205. You will have to move the NP205 back a couple of inches changing driveshaft lengths and shifter location. You will either need to cut the hole for the shifter further back or try to rebend the shifter?

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Does this small adapter work with the TH400 going to the 4L60?
Not sure if the output spline is the same as theTH350 tranny.

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
I am planning on doing an LQ4 to a 4L60 and 27spline np205 and was going to purchase the AA Parts needed. I heard recently that because of clearance issues when doing this swap, you need to have at least a 3"-4" lift for the engine and drivetrain to clear? I figure since you have already done this project, you would be the one in the know. I have already bought a 2" spring lift and now i am wondering if i got a little ahead of myself on the build. Thanks for the help thealien.

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Just got out of the transmission shop and not to my surprise they had no clue what the heck to do. They were hesitant on cutting the stock transfer case adapter to make the VSS fit. My question is do the original bearings need to be used or can they be removed? Also does the the coupling inside the TC need to be replaced? I ask because the new shaft I purchased from AA fits into the stock one!! Please help!

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
I'm look at doing this conversion in my blazer.
I'm going from a 383/700r4/205 to a 5.3L/4L60E/205. I have the advance adapter output shaft in my 700r4 for it to bolt up to the 350/205adapter. Do I need to use it and 50-0405 or do I just need 50-0405E without the shaft? And from what I read i might need to machine mine to fit together.

Thealien, what did you do on your front driveshaft?
Got everything installed yesterday, went to put the front shaft in and it hits the back corner of the pan.

I was thinking of taking my blazer to a driveshaft shop and see if they have any suggestions. I initially tried hammering the corner of the Trans pan in but still don’t have the clearance necessary. |

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
Not yet. But did talk with a good friend that has a 4wd shop and he said they make a smaller and shorter CV that he thinks should work. Just need to get
all the parts and a different yoke for the 205. I can post what I use when I get it done. Posted via Mobile Device

Good info...... can this be used on a 6L60e as well?........ it would be pretty badass to have a 6 speed auto behind a custom ls408 stroker lq9.

Re: Mating a 4L60 to an NP205 (part of my 5.3 swap)
i just got off the phone with matthew at advance adapters and he says that kit 50-5310 is a complete kit with all the machining done, its a bolt on and go kind of deal. you will still need to change out the output shaft, but other then that, its an easy swap
its currently priced at 681.00.. a lil steep,,but with all the guess work taken out,,probably well worth it

That is for a NP205 not a NP208. I would just call them and ask if it works for that or if you need something else.

Can you mate a NP205 to a 2WD 4L60? I've been looking for a 4WD 4L60s, but I'm wondering if a 2WD will work just as well.

Yes it will... After you change the tailshaft and add the adapter..
