Cruise control I.D.
Lots of threads lately about cruise for this year and that, what is correct and what isn't etc... I figured i would dig one out and see if the pros could help with this one. My best guess is a 73 4x4 truck with a V-8. Can anyone confirm or deny? Wish it was complete... Thanks, Eric

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Eric, I would say for sure 73-74', but I got one out of a 72' highlander at a junkyard that is very similar to this, but the transducer bracket is different where it bolts to the inner fender, and the vacuum bracket is shape a little different. I know Harold has the exact same setup as I do on one of his nice frame up resto's, and onews6 has pics of the same setup you have in his 72'. I still feel there is strong support that these could be considered correct for late 72' as well since I have seen several of these setups pictured in older threads that either match mine or yours, and of course the correct ones according to the manuals. I still stick with my motto that anything is possible over the years. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
I had a feeling you would reply. Thanks for the info. One piece of paper reads march-73. I suppose i should try to find the missing parts for this one. Let me know if you need any better pics of anything. Thanks trevor...

What is missing from it Eric? You could always get rid of it.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Eric, I will try and get some pics of my setup that I took from that 72' highlander. Like I said, there are some slight variations in the brackets. If you don't mind, I would like to see the installation diagram, I am going to be clueless by the time it is actually going to go into my crew cab a couple of years away. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
the vacuum bracket I have is similar but fits the fender well and the servo bracket is definitely different from what your kit shows. I will try to get a picture of it and a 68 system that I have as well. Harold

Re: Cruise control I.D.
TMS, Any chance of getting a good scan of all the paper work from that kit? It looks very similar to what is on my truck. My cruise has been disabled for a while. Through the years it has fallen apart. At some point I want to repair it. I could see a copy of that paperwork coming in real handy when I do it.
You can see in this pic the diaphragm is toast and there is a stud screwed in to the one vacuum line. I have no idea where that line should go. ![]()

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Eric, the system ohone has pictured is the same system that I have on my truck. It is also the same system that trevor pulled from the 72 he parted. You notice the difference in the the vacuum pot bracket vs. the unit you have your unit is more than likely for 73 up. Rod would be the member to speak with in regards to correctness as he is a wealth of info on these units, but I have not seen him in forever. Harold

What am I missing about the bracket? It looks the same to me. It's just upside down in the box.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
yeah, I agree that the vacuum bracket that Eric has is the same that ohonews6 has on his truck, but mine is shape different. Mine does not have both 90 degree angles, and the transducer bracket is different. I'll dig up some pics that I have of it that I took of it while it was still in the truck at the junkyard. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Jeff, I did talk to Rod about this awhile back. He did say it was possible as Harold and I have the same setup and then Ohonews6 has a similar setup, but me and Ohonews6 have or got them off of 72's, I think Harold's was on his 71. I have no doubt that the setup you have on your 71 is definitely correct for 71-72, but maybe just maybe this could be a late 72' dealer installed thing? I don't claim it to be, but maybe some dealer's installed these as the new 73's were coming out? That's why I say it could be a late 72' thing as the 73's would be coming out then. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Notice how many pics of cruise systems on Jeff's link use that Servo bracket setup. It appears to be pretty common, also Bob Moore listed a buddy had a cruise setup on a 71 or 72 that the vacuum was below the horn, which would be quite like the setup I found on the 72. It could be all these parts were replaced over the years, but there are an awful lot of setups similar to the cruise systems in question. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Good point Trevor,
I do think that the dealer installed kits had the early type servo in 71 and 72 and you may be right, in 72 or 73 they switched to the type you and several others found. For whatever reason, they changed the servo and we will probably never really know why. It's really a moot point, they were all dealer installed in 71, 72 and either style is genuine GM. I will say that since they were not installed at the factory it could be that the one you found was put on that truck in 73, 74, or even 79, there is know way to ever know. Or it could have been put on in 72. ![]() Jeff

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Very true, but it would have been pre-75 ish, as the style of cruise control changed. Unless a previous owner installed them, but there is a lot of proof of these things on the truck. This is one subject I enjoy debating and agreeing on with you Jeff. We will never know of course, but finding out answers is what this board was made on. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
I agree Trevor,
this is an interesting fun topic to discuss. Beats the heck out of the "How do I hook up my heater hose" question. We need to find an old parts man from back in the day who remembers this stuff. Jeff

Re: Cruise control I.D.
yes, I don't think the factory had holley carbs for these trucks during our era. Atleast not to my memory. The setup you just bought from Roger is correct for 71-72 for sure besides the switch, but these setups are up in the air for being correct. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Mine was definitely a dealer installed unit, and it was done in 72 not 71 when the truck was new, the original owner did not remember when but he stated that he had it put on after he bought the truck... for what that is worth. By 71 they were definitely dealer add ons as I think 69 or 70 was the last year available as an option. As I have understood it they were having problems with them and people weren't buying them so they discontinued the option and moved it to accessories. This falls into 8 track realm as there are least 2 different 8 tracks that were available through the dealer and both a correct. I would think that then as now as parts availability dictated that was what was passed across the counter, as it all served the same purpose and was hooked up the same. The set up that Eric has I have seen on later g series vans as well, but the diaphram bracket is different. After looking at the bracket in Erics post again, it looks like the bracket that is on my unit. The unit that Roger has listed for sale I believe is the generally accepted unit for our trucks, with the type Trevor, OHone and I have were prob. units added later on -as in late 72. Anything and everything can and does happen at a dealership, when I was working in one while in college a salesman sold a z71 but ordered a regular 4x4, the new owner came in and pitched a fit (rightfully so) and three days later he had a z71- built from the parts room and order desk. Same truck with added skid plates, stickers etc. that came with the z71 designation. If it happens now, it happened then. Forty years from now someone is going to flip out trying to figure out the deal on that truck (if it has not rusted to the ground or crushed as a clunker).

Re: Cruise control I.D.
I don't know when mine was installed but what I do know is that cruise was on it when my dad bought the truck. It was in the mid 80's and it had 107K on the clock. At that time the truck looked show room new and the cruise certainly looked original to the truck. I remember commenting on it when he brought the truck home. My guess would be, as some have already stated, the truck was purchased new in late 72 early 73 and the cruise was installed at that time by the dealer.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
It should be fairly simple to add with the Edelbrock. There are a number of universal aftermarket cruise options available today. Especially if you do not want a period correct cruise.
