Can you give us a little more information? By acting up do you mean you have a ticking sound, or are you having to adjust the lash over and over? Is this a new engine or an engine with a lot of miles on it.

Its possible that your adjusting nut is bad. Somtimes they back off try replacing it and see if that helps.

do a little research...check the rocker arms, pushrods and adj. nuts..It may just be a stuck lifter, but if a pushrods gone south, its best to find it quickly

I've had good luck with some automatic transmission fluid, just dump a quart in next time you need to add oil, run it about 100 miles and change oil......it knocks all the sludge and crap off the inside of the engine and can get rid of the varnish that causes lifters to stick.

Marvel is a top oil addative that cleans varnish. you shold be able to find it at an auto parts store,or farm supply store. It is usaully in a red colored tin can, with a screw off cap. If you cant find it , the ATF trick should work as well........crazyL

same problem....
i got a target master 350, don't know the exact miles but have a definite tick, adding the ATF works to loosen the lifter? how exactly? the engine doesn't burn or use oil so i want to just get the most miles out of it, thanks

If you really want to fix it right, pull the intake and pull all of the lifters (keep them in order, they have to go back in the same holes), and take them all apart and clean them in solvent. This is what the old factory service manuals recommended. There is most likely a piece of crap floating around inside one of the lifters that is sometimes blocking the check ball from sealing.

I like the marvel mystery oil, too. Use it for a couple of oil changes, and by the way, it works great as an air too lubricant. Just squirt a bit in the tool air inlet every now and then...

I've also had good luck with a product called "Rislone" on past lifter issues. It's in a yellow can with red lettering.

Can you run these products or a little tranny fluid in your oil all the time, or would it thin the oil to much, I keep thinking I heard that some guys would run a 1/2 a litre in your oil all the time, never tried it though.I put about a 1/2 litre in last night and the little ticker seem to stop, but only time will tell, I guess if it persists I'll have to do what Blazer1970 said.

Casey, the Marvel or the ATF I usually ran 100-200 mi, then changed the oil. Rislone is an addative that you can run to replace 1 quart of oil with every change......I have also used it, & not seen a bit of trouble....crazyL
