Buy a quality reproduction or find a nice original. You don't need to skimp on the wiring harness. Hacked/spliced harnesses are fire hazards, and you would hate to see your freshly restored truck go up in flames due to a bad harness.

I would say buy new if the budget permits. if your building a show truck or top quality truck, replacement should be a must. If your just going to use it for your daily driver for school and what not i would just check over what you have and see if it needs replacing(my Cheyennes is flawless). But if you do buy new, I just bought a painless wire kit and it arrived yesterday, I was told american autowire was they way to go and they were absolutely right. the painless isnt as complete as the aaw kit. just my .02

M&H auto electric makes a great original tye type plug and play as does American auto electric- I have used both and they are worth the money. Also the wire has improved and this beats material that is 40 + years old and hacked to crap.

If the cash flow allows it, I second the M&H Harness.

Re: wireing harnes, buy one or make one???

Yeah I am an electrical engineer and know my way around wires, however it is still well worth it to me to save the hassle of building a new wiring harness. UNLESS you have all of the lengths/connectors/colors to reference. In that case, it would be fairly straightforward. Good luck getting that info though! If you do, post it up here.

It would take $2 to $3 hundred to buy enough spools & terms. to do it yourself. The results would not be as good as store bought harness. I saw a Packard onetime that was wired with one spool of wire. It was about 14 gauge red. What a nightmare.
