Starter problems?

Hello I need a little help. My truck isnt starting right now. When I turn the key I get just one single click and thats it.

I noticed once a month it does this but I'll come back to it in like hour or keep playing with it and it turns over and starts. I waited all day and it still isnt starting now.

My friend told me to hit the starter with a hammer should I really do that? I dont see how it would help.

Thanks in advance

i lol at this because this just happend to me on new years eve night. every once in a while my starter would make a loud banging noise. i ignored it and thought well it isn;t broken yet. so i start my truck to go to 7-11 and i heard a VERY LOUD BANG THEN GRINDING noise. people came out of there houses and thought someone ran into someones car lol. end of that starter i banged on it with a hammer and it then barely cranked over. i bought a starter 2 days later.

Re: Starter problems?

hammer trick will work for a little bit. But you need a starter. You can get them from Napa or smith auto for pretty cheap if you have those around there where u live.

Re: Starter problems?

haha thanks guys...I def need a new one. I just hit it with a hammer a bunch of times and it made a crank noise for half a second lol. There is a little bit of grease on it maybe drips from valve cover could that have ended its life prematurely.

Are there any brand names that I should get or stay away from. I could call a friend that can get me discount on auto parts but I dont know name brands he can get me.

I am also debating if I can do it myself. Looking in haynes manual doesnt seem that hard and my truck is lifted I almost dont even have to lift it up.

Re: Starter problems?

oh yeah but my solonoid was clicking so I think that means it was working just the motor wasnt strong enough. The new one starts up my engine alot faster. I'm happy cant go wrong for $32.
