windshield chrome trim Q?

Well guys I ordered the chrome trim for the windshield from lmc and I'm gettin ready to replace it, cause it's real jacked up, and I'm wondering if anybody has tried to do this by themselves w/o removing the rubber b/c that is still in good condition! Can I do this with the tool they sell at oreillys? Or is it better to take it to a windshield shop and pay them? Any suggestions? Thanks...

Let me know guys...........

You can do it after the window is installed. I don't know what tool they sell but its easier with the correct tool. THe back window the only thing that is hard is the little corner pieces. They are just a piece of crap and don't stay in.
Just clean it out good. It is not a fast job but I have done it many times
I will post some pics of good tools we sell.

The first is a quality one for various types
The second is specific to your chevy truck
The third is an inexpensive one that works ok

use some lubricant.

Re: windshield chrome trim Q?

Hey MBG Mike, The first tool that you show is the tool that I saw at O'Reilly's and I'm only pulling the front chrome trim .Any suggestions on pulling the old one out first? Do you just pry out the trim? Or are there any clips holding the trim in? Sorry for all the questions, just wanna do it the right the first time. Thanks...

the only "clip" there is is the little metal piece in the middle holding the two ends together (shown in your last photo) once you get that out, you can use that same tool, or an ice pick to get one end out, and just pull it out, easy as that, as he says, lube works well, itd probable be smart to get a "glass bone" as well, it will help you out tremendously, i also found using the foamy window cleaner works well as a lube, it wont leave a big mess as an oil will, hopefully allt his helps! if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

Re: windshield chrome trim Q?

When I put my trim in, I used the red handled tool above. It took a bit of learning since I had never done it before, but in 10 minutes or so I was all done. I don't think I had to use any lube, just go steady and don't go too fast and it slides in like butter, the only tricky thing could be putting in the metal clip. The ones on the back window suck more than a hoover though.

Re: windshield chrome trim Q?

If you don't have any foamy window cleaner, dish soap and water will do the same thing. With either one, clean up is easy, just hose it off. Seems like a glass shop should do it pretty cheap, though, since you already have the molding.

Yeah you can be fired for bringing it into a shop but not many people know that some auto paints have silicon in the paint as well as does the steel.I know some painters here that will argue that but its the truth.
Soapy water works to

Also I found it helps to soak the chrome strip in a bath of hot water it makes it more pliable.

Re: windshield chrome trim Q?

Although I paid someone to do mine (switched to rubber from chrome lock strips) since I had to remove my front and rear windshields for paint, it didn't look to hard to put the lock strips in.
