6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

Does anyone know if these were put in coil spring trucks? Also, are these c-clip style or retainer bearing style? How hard to find one?

Hit up the guys on the 4x4 section, they will have an answer for you. I'm no expert, but I think all 60's were 8 lug.

Maybe a moderator could move this to the 67-72 truck area?

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

I have one. Leaf spring type, 3.54 gears, LSD. Swapping from leaf mount to coil mount is a cut and weld job. Not very difficult, just careful setup.

I almost forgot, they are bearing retainer type.

I've been looking into these but can't find much info on them, do they have the big hub that sticks out like in the 8 lug version? If you could I would love to get some pics of the rear end. Thanks in advance

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

1957 was the first year for the D60 rear with leaf.
I currently have a 55 6 lug rear truck in my garage. Within something non dana 60 in it. While my 57 has one. Supposedly with the research I have done 1957 was the first year for the Dana 60s.

Now with the 67-68 1/2 tons they were also 6 lug many were coil spring rear. As for the 60-66 these also had come coil rear ends in them. However I don't know much about them. I would assume thats probably the earliest you would find them.

I hope that helps shed some light on it. Or at least points you in a direction to look. The 67 I have right now is leaf also so I couldn't help ya with this truck on what style the retainers are.

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

Had a buddy in high school that had a 70' stepper . It had a Dana 60 in it and it was coil spring . He said it was out of a camper special and it was a bolt in . It was 6 lug semi float . Truck had a strong small block with a Muncie 4 speed . He had torn up 2 12 bolts .

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

you can also look for a dana 61.these are used in 80's ford trucks and vans.i see alot of these in wrecking yards because even though they're 8 lug,the off road guys pass them up because they are semi-floating.i'm sure it would not be very expensive to re-drill the axle shaft to 6 lug and it should be close to the dimension spec you need.some 60's ford trucks had 5 lug dana 60 axles as well.hope this helps.

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

My D60 is a semi float.( ie. No it does not have the big chunk sticking out like the 8 lug full float version.) The 6 lug D60 has axle ends identical to the D44 found on the Blazer/Jimmies.

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

The axle you are talking about is the Dana 60-35. It is semi-floating with 6 lug flanges. It does not use C-clips, the wheel bearings press on the shafts with a ring and there is a retainer on the end of the tube. The hub is no larger than any 10 bolt. The 60-35 is pretty rare, it was a heavy duty option on GMC 1/2 ton 4X2's up to 1969 or 1970. Not sure if it was ever 'factory' on Chevys. I think the majority of 60-35's would have been used on pickups with leaf springs, but the 1969 GMC light duty parts book does show a 60-35 housing for coil spring suspension used on Suburbans and panels. It is also interesting that the book shows the 60-35 was only available with 3.54 gears.

Re: 6-Lug Dana 60 ?'s

Looks like I will have to hit up the wrecking yard to try and find one. I think one would hold up to what I have planned for my truck. Now I wonder if there are any disc setups for these rearends...

I never found one specific for the 6 lug D60. I found several that might fit with some alterations. The bracket is the issue. No one could verify that the bracket would align the caliper correctly. Lots of "It should work."

I also looked at the big drum brake kit from ECE. Still pricey, but it would suit my load carrying needs.

Yes there are 6 lug Dana 60 rears with coils. They came with big blocks and they are 3.54s. I have one in my 1970 GMC Sierra Grande. Love it.

My 69 1/2t has a six lug Dana 60. It says nothing special on the spid but the truck was set up for towing and also had air shocks.
