Engine Dress Up Kit

So I ordered a new dress up kit for my sons 71 cheyenne. Problem is that the valve covers don't have holes for some hoses that are on his original valve covers. There are some hoses linking the two valve covers on his original ones. Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this. Also his original air filter has an arm the connects to the exhaust manifold whats this for? The new air filter didn't come with this either. Any solutions would be appreciated. The short answer: you don't need either of them. As long as you have a port for a PCV valve on one of the valve covers and an oil fill hole on the other, you're good to go. And, I have no idea what the arm that comes off of the air filter is for. I've never seen one and would hazard that you don't need it either.

the stock air cleaner some have a flap in the "arm" that sticks out and the pipe form the manifold would supply heat to that. if you are running a open element cleaner like the chrome ones there is no need for this pipe

That hole is just sheet metal around the manifold and can be removed or just left as is.

the thing with inexpensive dress up valve covers is they usually dont have baffles for the PVC syatem to work properly like the factory ones had// your oil consumption may go way up and you might have problems fouling plugs with non baffeled valve covers

If the valve covers aren't baffled, you can get baffled breather grommets.

just make sure they have baffles in there b4 you start driving it around and stuff or you will have oil everywhere. trust me, thats what happened to me. me and my dad made sum baffles out of some thin sheets of metal and pop rivited them in mine. (cheap solution) make sure you have a hole for the pcv valve and run it to the air cleaner so it can breath. and make your baffle under the oil fill cap drain easy so you can change the oil easily. if you dont, it will be a pain in the butt putting oil in the engine. good luck!

hmm so should i get some better valve covers then? also im guessing the hose that attaches to the stock air filter is for the pcv valve right? how can i attach it to the new chrome filter? dammit i think i should have spent more $$ on this one lol. thanks for everyones help

Don't give up so quick. Take a peek at the back side of the valve covers and see if there's a baffle behind the hole for the breathers. If they don't have baffles you can get breather grommets with baffles from Summit for a buck or two.

Found on summit and yeah they cheap, but how do I vent my pcv to the air filter? Also just so I understand I only need a breather on one valve cover and the hole in the other is for Oil in right? LOL I know I sound stupid but I cant help it!!! Thanks again

I ran my PCV to the front of the carb, though I guess you could run it to the back of the aircleaner if it has the nipple to attach the hose to. PCV on one valve cover, breather on the other. You can pull the breather to add oil.

im running a quadrajet and I just ran a hose from the pcv to the front of the carb, no need to run it to an open air cleaner

I guess what I am asking is I have a hose that comes from the intake/ carb that goes to the air filter. What should I do with that???????

this is my setup on my 71 the blue arrow is the push in breater/oil fill hole,the green arrow is the port on my carb that the hose from the pvc valve (yellow line )connects to and the red arrow is the hole where the pvc valve is installed in the valve cover (i have a rag in the hole in the pic.) hope this helps

that looks right, did you see if there are baffles in there?

Valve covers are baffled. On the original ones this a big hose< I'm guessing its the breather going to the back of the carb and a smaller hose going to the front (PCV ?). Then I still have a small vacuum type hose going fro the carb to the air filter. I'm guessing I can just get rid ove the breather hose and the hose from the carb to the air filter. Am I correct? I tried to take photos but they came out really crappy!

Get rid of all that, cap any open ports that you aren't gonna use. Breather in one valve cover, PCV in the other, run PCV to front of carb. There might be an issue with the aircleaner and the carb, assuming you have a Quadrajet. You might need a spacer. You can use the spacer that's already there, and just trim it and plug any open holes on it.

Auto parts store should have little rubber caps to cap the ports with.

ok i think im set, just one last questio on the kit from summitt the oil breather grommett isnt an open hole, am i supposed to cut it open??

I cut the bottom off mine because I have baffles.
