Advice on Mufflers

I'm putting new mufflers on my truck to get a better sound out of it. The current set up is about as conservative as you can get and you wouldn't know I had a 350 under the hood.

I'm looking at Flowmaster and immediately the Super44 caught my eye. After looking/listening to some clips on youtube I'm afraid they might be too far the other direction, I definitely don't want an obnoxious sounding vehicle.

Any advice for middle-of-the-road sounding mufflers? Any sound or vid clips would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I love the Magnaflow mufflers.
I have the 22" duals on my truck and actually could use more volume at idle but when you get on it they sound good. so I would probably go with a 18" muffler next time.

I can price you some mufflers if you wish.

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I have a 350 with long tube headers, 2 1/2" pipe, no crossover, then flowmaster 40s mounted toward the front of the bed, then turndowns right after the muffler. It is pretty loud but if it had tailpipes it would be alot quieter. I'll try to get a sound clip today, but its raining right now. I've been meaning to do one anyway. I like the sound of the 40's, but I don't like the turndowns they give it a kind of tinny sound. I'm sure it is the turndowns making the tinny sound because I had the mufflers mounted straight to the headers with nothing on the outlet (That was LOUD! more than a 20 minute drive and I'd have a headache all day, the cab was like a drum and amplified the sound) and it didn't have that sound to it. I've considered taking a sawzall to the turndowns but haven't done it yet. Anyways, if the rain lets up I'll get a clip.

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I got a few clips on my way to Home Depot, they aren't the greatest but you can get an idea of what my setup sounds like (details earlier in this post). The first clip is with the camera under the rear bumper with a 4k rev, shut down and restart. The second clip is easy take off from two stop signs. The third is a more agressive take off (started out in 2nd, shifted about 3k after spinning, when I shifted to 3rd you can hear the tires spinning I let off because I was getting sideways).

Hope you guys like it

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I second the thrush. I have them on my 89 with a 350. They sound like the Flowmasters but are half the price. Had them on there for going on 5 years with no problems.

Re: Advice on Mufflers

i have 2 magnaflow glasspack mufflers inline. it sounds almost stock with very very nice note to my big block. i it almost sounds like a low revving version of an European v8, no joke!.its a stock gen 5 454 with an eddie carb and manifold. its 3 inch exhaust pipe all the way back. its a real sleeper. i have heard my truck open manifolds before and its just toooo damn loud, even with the stock top end; so i know its working extremely well. at idle, you can hear the exhaust pulse quietly "bounce" inside the pipes making it sound really sexy . i got hooker headers, its a "y" style junction from 2 3" inch pipes to one. i ran the . equal length sections from each header before the junction (the junction being inches back from the transmission pan). one muffler is about halfway back, the other one is right before the rear axle, from the second muffler is just straight out the back. super deep tone too.
i am pretty amazed of how sounds. i was expecting the sound of am old choked out Packard with no real pattern to the sound, but instead i got a super sexy sounding big block. haha this combination was a winner. i went 3 inch back when i was going to do top end work to get more power, i ended up not going that route anymore, but the exhaust stayed.

Re: Advice on Mufflers

In my opinion most mufflers that I like have an annoying drone at certain rpms usually at cruise speed, but they sound so good outside that i have dealt with it until this truck I put on magnaflows no drone ,but they sound kinda like an old glasspack when you get on it!! Its a tradeoff lose lose for me I guess overall though I am happier with magnaflows than flowmasters or edelbrocks or dynomaxs i have had them all on sbc before

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I have Flowmaster delta 40's they are under the bed, dont drone bad at all. But they really bark when you step on the go pedal.
I have a vid of my stock engine with the exhaust, and my new engine with the same exhaust.

Re: Advice on Mufflers

I have 3 inch mandrel bent Y pipe Single Exhaust system with long tube headers on my 454BB The muffler is a Bullet ProTurbo Round Muffler by bullet performance Not too loud but sounds great when I get on it I wanted to be differnet & alittle stealthy. Like try to creep up on someone then unlease the power but its hard because they still hear me coming I don't know how these would sound on a 350 but Iam sure they will sound just as great I hate Flows everyone has them..

Re: Advice on Mufflers

If you want something that's not too loud and not too quiet, I suggest the Flowmaster 50 series. They're a 3 chamber muffler instead of just 2 chambers like the 40 and 44 series mufflers. They have a lower, deeper and more mellow tone than any of the 40 series designs. I had a set on my 86 GMC and loved them. I have the Super 40's on my 68. I like them alot, but wish I had went the the 50 series.

Here's a couple vids of my 68 with the Super 40's.

As far as Magnaflows having less drone, I'm gonna have to raise the flag on this one.
I put a Magnaflow on my 94 F150 and I HATE it. It drones in the cab worse than any Flowmasters I've ever had. It does have a pretty decent sound from the outside, but inside it will drive you nuts.

Wow! Thanks for all the clips. I'm really getting a good idea of which direction to go with these responses.

Out of curiosity anyone have a soundclip of the flowmaster 50 series? There are a few on youtube but all later model stuff. Thanks!
