Re: security question

I know this doesn't work for everyone, but when my truck is home, it's in the garage.

As far as kill switches, when I got my truck someone had mounted an on/off style toggle switch that was wired into the power wire for the HEI. Simple enough, cut wire, hook each end to the toggle, flip the switch, truck won't start.

Re: security question

a big dog and a shotgun

the most common thing I've hear of is ignition kill switches that are simply hidden under the dash. as for the hoods, if memory serves me, there is a kit to put a hood release inside the cab like a late model. chains are obviously the cheapest and quickest to install, however if you ever have to get under the hood really fast (like a fire or other catistrophic failure) you won't be alble to get under the hood. I keep mine in the garage so i dont hve to worry about even locking the doors at night...

Install an anti theft device and a picture of your dog on the window with a warning that you will let him loose if anyone is caught messing with your truck in the driveway.

Also a hidden kill switch will work. I'd place it inside the truck where they would have to break the window and set off the alarm in order to steal the truck.

Re: security question

I have a kill switch that it is so simple that even when I showed some of my guys they still could not figure it out where it was at.......

My truck never leaves my sight and it is garaged when not in use.

Re: security question

I have a cold-natured motor and a holley carburetor with no choke, the lack of most people's knowledge of starting carbureted vehicles is appalling, but it works in my favor.

in a worse case scenario, I remove my ground wire going from the engine to the battery, not many people carry a wire large enough to replace it.

Re: security question

I've had an idea, I want to add a relay to the ignition circuit. I want to add it to the hotwire between the ignition switch and distributor (HEI). I want to add a simple push button (hidden somewhere) that I have to push that excites the relay allowing current to flow from the switch to the HEI while I crank the engine. When the engine starts and I release the push button I need current to flow until the ignition switch is turned off. I think I need what they call a hold-in style relay, Anyone done anything similar? I want to avoid a simple toggle switch mainly because I figure it will get stolen the first time I forget to flip the switch. I don't know much about relays but I think they have one that works this way. Is it a silly idea? What am I missing?

Re: security question

I used to have the Grant no wheel no steal steering column hub on mine, still got it. I'll probably keep it on when I finish my project. You use a key to take the steering wheel off when you park.

Re: security question

I have removable steering wheel on both my trucks. I am convinced it has saved my daily driver from being stolen. Its been broken into and the hood popped a couple of times. Cheap insurance, about a $100 for the kit. Jegs carries them (Grant). Only draw back is it places the wheel about 2 inches closer to you so you want to use a wheel with a minimal amount of dish. Here is what it looks like on my blue truck with the wheel off.

Here it is with the wheel on:

Re: security question

Stick it under the seat. If I leave the truck for long time I use a cable and a lock to secure the wheel.

That's the only problem with our rides, 6 foot of 12 gauge wire and the dip stick, gone in 60 seconds!

Re: security question

Simple kill switch even just unplugging the HEI wire from the fuse box has to deter a thief somewhat.

Re: security question

Sorry to hear some bastard was messing with your truck. The truth is if someone wants it there gonna take it. I live in Dallas and most trucks are snatched up with wreckers. All you can really do is try to slow them down. before I wrecked mine a few weeks ago I would double club my steering and full lock the wheel so they can't steer because if you can steer you can push. If you got a garage use it, park cars behind it if you can to slow them down. The people who take these trucks number job or chop'em up and ain't joyriders so it will take more than a kill switch to turn them away when all you need is a wire and a screwdriver to jump the starter and drive off. Good luck and keep an eye out cause you can bet they will be prepared if they come back. Later.

Re: security question

Here is what I may do with a couple of relays. I like the idea of putting it between the ignition switch and the HEI activating it with some sort of hidden push button or switch. If someone doesn't know to push the hidden switch first it will have no fire and just crank until the battery dies. What do you think?

It's called a latching relay circuit. You just need a double pole relay to do it. Nothing special. I see no real advantage over a toggle. Honestly I don't see the advantage to a toggle. Most who steal these trucks also know all you need is a hot wire to the coil or HEI. No amount of switches or relays will stop that. Just my opinion.
