Junkyard find 38

In March of 2007 my buddy Jason, screen name THE UGLY, decided he wanted a long term full build type vehicle. So we went out searching. After a few backroads, old farms, major junk yards (yes we have old stuff in yards here), we found a small yard that we didn't know existed. They had everything pretty well organized. As we came upon the Chevy truck area, he saw this and just had to have it. He talked them down to $600 for the complete truck as it sat. So, he went back with the trailer and loaded it up.

Re: Junkyard find 38

We disassembled everything and chopped the top. It is not yet completely welded up as we only work on it every now and then. He picked up a donor s-10 and we will build a frame incorporating the suspension components and a SBC. Further plans include air bags, and a whole lot less metal than we started with. I will get some more pictures up this weekend but decided I could not wait any longer to show it off.

Re: Junkyard find 38

I like it.But,isn`t that a`37?Does it have wood in the cab?`38 was the first all steel construction. They look the same from 38-40.In the first picture, the truck to it`s right w/red cowl and black fenders looks like a 38-40.The grille has horizontal bars.The`37 has verticle fins.Maybe it`s titled as a`38.`37s are my favorites.

Re: Junkyard find 38

I thought it was a 37 as well. But he determined it to be a 38. He has no title yet so I guess it could be either. It has no wood other than in the bed. The cab is all steal. Could it have been a 38 with a 37 style grill?

Re: Junkyard find 38

I believe the bodies made a big enough change between those years that they won`t swap.I hope to learn a lot more about these early GMs.I`m no expert, just always loved`em.Definitely want one.I may be wrong, but I believe the 38-40 cab is about the same as the 41-47?They have the same contours or very similar.Rounded more than prior. For all I know GM made two designs like they seem to do in a lot of years of changed body styles. The bed fenders were swapped from earlier.I guess you guys knew that.

Re: Junkyard find 38

I think I`m wrong on some of this.I believe`38s had a grille simular in shape to the`37,but horizontal fins with bars ever few fins. The verticle line where the grille meets the body has a curve that matches the headlight bucket and the`37 is straight.The`38 has a simular cab,but isn`t quite ad flat looking.A`37 is definitely the last of wood frame bodies and`38 the first all steel.

Re: Junkyard find 38

Ya, it was cool to find that yard. We went to another local yard yesterday and found a 38 with VIN tags still on it! (I think they are the world's most expensive yard.(They wanted "$25-50" for taillights out of a 60s wagon. ) Thanks for the help guys. I got a phone picture of it as it sits, but I need to get it out of my email and post it. I can't link pics off my phone unfortunately. You should see it today.

Sorry for the blurry shot. And the license plate is to give you a perspective of the chop.

Re: Junkyard find 38

Thank you! It is going to kind of be a combination. He wanted a rat but wanted a nicer "traditional" type build too. It is going to get a couple of unique mods, and a few that have been done. We kinda decide a lot of stuff as we work on it. All of a sudden, "Hey, I got an idea. Let's do..." It is a fun build for sure.

Re: Junkyard find 38

The S-10 gave it's life for us to use the suspension components (front & rear), along with those areas of frame as wel. The driveline will be a SBC.
And yes, that yard is very cool. They have a bunch of other cool old stuff too.

Re: Junkyard find 38

It is outside of a town called Dacono, CO. I would be more than happy to help locate some stuff for anyone. I also have a yard outside Greeley, CO that has quite a bit. But they are VERY proud.
