Was there ever 427's or 454's....

Was there every any 71-72 trucks produced with a factory 454? Also were there ever any early GM trucks produced with a 427...Just curious I thought I had heard that a few 72's had been given the 454....and my dad said he thought that there was a truck version 427.

Thanks, Ron

Re: Was there ever 427's or 454's....

I'm not sure of the 454's, but there is a "tall-deck" 427 that was put in the medium duty trucks C40,50,60, etc. These engines are quite a different animal than the 427's you could get in 'vettes, COPO camaro's and Chevelle's, though. For light duty trucks- I'm inclined to say the 396/402 was the only BB offered until '73.

Some of the "402" badged trucks actually had a 396 in them. Maybe Longhorn Man can elaborate on that.

I actually have a "tall deck" 427 ci in my truck. I have bored and stroked it to a 525 ci. You can make some really make some big engines out of these "tall Deck" platforms. I think you can go up to a 568 ci. but thats pushing it. My engine came out of a C-50 or C-60 dump truck.

There were 396 badged trucks with 402s and no 402 badged trucks with 396.Just go by my first response for accurate info on the engine itself. The badging just confuses people.

396 was made through`69.
402 took it`s place in`70.
69/70s were badged as 396.
71/72s were badged as 402.
SPIDS?As late as`71 they still listed the motor as a 396.

The guy that assembled my engine said I should be getting around 650 hp. and around 650-700 ft/lbs torque. I dont know for sure, never had it on a dyno. It has a 4.310" bore and a 4.500" stroke, compared to a stock standard deck or tall deck 4.250" bore and a 3.760" stroke.

and remember, they were never 'badged' as 402 in the trucks, they were badged as 400's.

Yeah,I always say badged as 402 cuz that`s what it is.But,the badge actually reads 400.What I mean when I say badges is GM still "called" the 402 a 396 in`70 and "called" them a 402 in 71/72.In68/69 GM called the 396 what it was and no bade in`68.

Yeah,I always say Badged as 402 cuz that`s what it is.But,the badge actually reads 400.What I mean when I say "badged" is GM "called" the 402 a 398 in`70 and "called" them a 402 in 71/72.In 68/69 GM called the 396 what it was with no badge in`68.Thanks for clarifying my clarification Andy.
