I've always heard that yes they can. Jmedero, what is the reasoning behind the front of the comp facing the rear? I can't figure that out.

Re: Compressor question

I really have no idea. I was told it is for the air filtering to keep trash down to a minimum. I really don't buy it it was just what I was told.

Re: Compressor question

How does the compressor know the front of the truck from the rear?

Re: Compressor question

come on Shane, built in directional finder..... duh!

I read somewhere, probably here, that Viair recommends not to mount them upside down. however, many have done so without problem one.....

Re: Compressor question

From the horses mouth(Viair website)

Q: Is it possible to mount the compressor sideways? Must it be mounted with the cylinder upright?
A: Yes, you can mount our compressors in any direction or position because they are oil-less. The only position we do not recommend is upside
down, since heat tends to travel upward, and does not dissipate well in the motor housing of the compressor.

Q: If I mount my compressor sideways, is there anything I should be careful of when doing this?
A: If you mount your compressor sideways to the frame rail, you should periodically check to make sure that your compressor is mounted securely.
Use a thread-locking compound to keep the bolts from backing out and causing the compressor to fall off of the vehicle.

mine doesnt have a drain port, so one day i pushed a screwdriver in the schrader valve i have on my tank and it spit water out. after that, it built right up. i know, i need to get a drain port AND a water trap lol

Re: Compressor question

i have had two 480's mounted upside down for 2 years now with zero problems, and i cycle the hell out of them. i dont think you will have a problem if you do mount them in this way. daniel.
