Medium Duty trucks
O.K. here we go but is NOT a pick up truck! But it could pick up your pick up truck and take it for a ride.

Re: Medium Duty trucks
A C50 with hydraulic brakes? And what's with that super short wheelbase? Or is it just the angle of the pic? LOL

Re: Medium Duty trucks
My '69 C-50 has a single reservoir hydraulic brake system.
It also has a "line lock" set up as it is a tow vehicle. The parking brake is cable operated. it is actually a brake drum at the output shaft of the transmission. It has shoes in it just like a regular brake drum. |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Boog The dual wheels are off the axle, the hub is holding them together, the wheels (tires) are rolled up under in front of axle behind cab. It is not super short the photo looks that way though. bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
I have no experience with the 40,50 &60 series and just assumed those heavy duty trucks would have more than a standard hydraulic brake system is all. That drum type parking brake I remember from military trucks.
Everynow and then I could use a rollback myself too.

Re: Medium Duty trucks
C 50 rollback looks like mine is the same single reservoir with a line that goes to a brake control in the cab that operates electric trailer brakes. bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Livrat; this is starting to look like something. You would probably be the one to ask.Do the after market sheet metal repair parts that are available for the 67-72 c10 fit the c50 67-72. Parts such as cab corners, floor, rocker panels would they work on the c50? There are a couple of individuals that are looking for suppliers of medium duty fenders (c50) for me. Fenders and extension (lower fenders) that bolt to the step would help the appearance of my truck. bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Livrat; do you think any parts of of this truck( 1964 c60) would work on 67-72 or vise versa. This is a hypothetical question. For instance would the rear suspension or the axle be compatable with my 67 c50. Would the leaf springs be the same lenght. bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Cab corners and rear floor pans are the same between all of the 67/72 trucks.. front floors are different near the kick panel but could be made to work.. the rockers are different at the very front, but again could be made to work.. I am no help on the lower fender extensions as every one I have come across all have rust on the lower lip..
I am not sure what all in interchangeable with the 66 C60.. I would assume that alot of the chassis stuff is the same.. There are two C60's in a wrecking yard here and both have rusty fender extensions and running boards and not real good usable sheet metal.. Although I did score a Tach/Vac dash out of one.. |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Nice trucks guys, always good to see interest in these old workhorses.
Here's my medium duty: 1972 c50 tandem axle (one drive/one tag), 5spd with 2spd rear, 366 v8. Also rocking the dayton wheels, which are apparently rated for more weight than the regular budd wheels (but much harder to change than the budds). This truck was a grain truck, had a dump grain bed on it which the PO kept for another truck. Has a little rust on the passengers fender, and a softball sized hole in the floor on the drivers side. Also in the glove box under all the rat byproducts, I found the operators manual and the protect-o-plate! Plans for this truck include chopping off the tag axle and shortening the wheelbase significantly, putting a flatbed on, and maybe an engine swap? The only reason I bought the truck was because it was dirt cheap and I needed something to haul trailers with in the immediate area. That, and it's just really cool |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Great to see all of these trucks. These things are awesome! I just dropped off the rollback to get it inspected. Tomorrow I get to find out what I am going to need to do to get it on the road. This is the first time I have driven it for any significant distance. It handles great, worked it through all of the gears, doesn't wander around, brakes good and straight but I know I am going to have to do something. Hopefully just wiper blades (joke).
Are brake shoes, drums, wheel cylinders, wheel bearings available? Parking brake parts? Is the blower motor/heater core same as the "little" trucks? Still looking for options on tires. 9R 22.5 on there now. I would be in a much better mood if I hadn't finally got the locks to work, put my keys in the key drop at the inspection shop and realizes that my cell phone was sitting on the seat inside the truck. |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
C50 rollback; Just purchased rear wheel cylinders for my 67 c50. Check these part #s out on napapartsonline.com The parts purchased can be view by entering these number once you are at the site. Each brake requires 2 cylinders one is 37159 and the other is 37160 I think that is the top one. The other side uses the same parts.
Wagner brake hardware f128905 includes Auto adj kit h2920 and wheel kit 35330002fj. The f128905 is passenger side and I'm waiting on the other side which has the #128904 to come from California. Which they said it was the last in the warehouse and i have to pay another 8$ to reserve it for me. That's a story in itself. I'll tell you what comes in the kit when it gets here. Back to the rear wheel cylinder a friend's son picked up a 68 or 69 c50 to use on property that they are going to build a house on. His rear wheel cylinders had been spaced out with spacers to move them in the center of the brake shoe. Obviously the wrong wheel cylinder. So the kid knew that I had my rears apart, he cam over and got the part # of of mine. Narrowed it down through books that napa had. Think they were old books. Got the parts. He has put them on and have not heard anything to the contrary. So I ordered them. I think they came out of Illinois from napa's brake line of products UL (united line). The counter Guy say that the factory had like 280 of them available. So some thing is happening because five years ago the availablity was not that promising. When I first inquired they wanted 168$ a piece. That was not happening. Something must have influenced the market. Maybe it is that folks are rebuilding America one wheel cylinder at a time. You should hope to pay around 35$ per cylinder. But any wah you can see a nice pic of them on the napa site. bushy Last edited by bushytlb; 02-02-2010 at 12:28 AM. |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
C50 rollback: Your rims look to be in good shape. I've be told by tire guy a number of different accounts. The chain store will not do them but their man will moon light and come and do them on your property. Others say they won't put them back together unless they are proper. others say you are fine just need a cage. I've had mine done take it back to the truck chained. Talk about nervous. Then I've be told that you won't how until you have a load on them. So who knows. If the tires are still good you have time to look around and see how people are handling the challenge. I don't like to be at the mercy of the tire guy whether or not he is going to do it, or not. When you find the solution please do tell.bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
Bushy:
Thanks for all the brake info. Don't even know yet if I need brake work but it is for sure I will some day. If I don't need a brake job I will probably purchase parts anyhow to have on hand. I will find out today about the brakes and tires. Tread is good but some dry rot. Special-K: From reading here I would assume that the interiors as well as the cab structure are the same as c-20. c-30. They just mounted a a regular cab up high and made up the difference in the lower part of the fenders and steps. I am not a Chevy guy but even the doors look the same. Truck is being "inspected" today. I have two bids already for tires but I did not tell either party that I may have split rims. I just called them up and gave tire size and told them C-50. Can you tell by looking at the pictures wether or not I do? |

Re: Medium Duty trucks
C50 rollback; look on the back side of the rims. In the center you will notice a raised up area that rolls over toward the dish (the part that has the bolt holes in it) that is where the rim halfs connect to one another. Hopefully some more experienced members will weigh in. I just called Frey the wheel guy (now, Frey heavy duty I think). They seem to be the go to guy around northern ny (Prd near to O Canada). Remember I'm just getting my head back in to this stuff. I've been away from it for awhile. I'll let you know what the wheel guy says. Will rebuild America one rim at a time. bushy

Re: Medium Duty trucks
C50 Rollback, I'm sure you dont have split rims on your truck. If they are 22.5 as you say there should be no problem. Split rims are usually 20's as probably came stock on your truck, it looks like someone already spent the big bucks and replaced the wheels on yours.
