what are these 3 wires for?

ok i just picked up a guage cluster from a 79 chev to take the spedometer from and put into mine(i would just use the whole thing but the new one has a electric oil pressure sensor mine doesnt) but on the back of the spedometer there is 3 wires and i dont know what they are for... the harness was already cut and i couldnt see the other end the green black and red

anyone know what theyre for?

That is the newer electronic speedo from an 87 & up (not 100% on the years).

The speedometer is still cable driven, but it generates the vehicle speed signal for the ecm. That's what those wires are for. 87-89 (or 90) i believe. in 90 or 91 they started putting the VSS in the transmission or transfer case.

Cool thx thecluster is the same size shap as mine and I pulled it out of a 79 so the po must have put it in... So the wires are of no use to me then?

Nope, only a small bolt holds it on.

Not that it really matters, but think they were on back in the mid 80s, remember looking for some clusters and see that on there. IIRC it's for the lockup on the 700s.

Ok, is there any easier way to hook the speedo cable up other then removing the heater ducting and scratching the heck outa yer arm to reach it?

My 86 GMC has that same connection that goes into a small connector behind the dash. I haven't followed it any further.
