TH350 Slip Yoke Question for '64 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

We pulled the old 292 and 3-speed out of my Dad's '64 Suburban and replaced it with a worn but still good running 350/TH350 combo. We need to get the drivshaft shortened/balanced and replace the yoke for the tranny. This build is on a pretty serious budget, so I'm hoping to find a yoke at a recking yard or something that will work vs. paying $55 for a new one. I know, I'm cheap, but pennies count these days.

Can anyone tell me what yoke would work? The old one was a 16 spline and the one needed is 27 spline. I'm assuming we'll need one that took the same style u-joint, right? Can I just use one from a newer truck? Any particular makes/models I should consider? Any thoughts would be apreciated!

There are more knowledgable tech guys on this site that may correct me, but I think you can use just about any yoke off a TH350 from any GM brand, probably anything from the 80's would provide the correct fit. It's been almost 20 years, but I'm pretty sure when I pulled the granny 4 speed out of mine, it also had the the same yoke, and I simply reused it on the 350. I don't remember changing it until years later when I swapped in a Richmond 4 speed which needed the larger TH400 yoke.

It's been my experience over the years that u-joints general come in two sizes, the large cap and the small cap. Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, etc. The few times I've come up with a mismatch (like with a 9" Ford or Pontiac axle), I simply used a combination joint which has large caps on two trunnions and small on the other two. They are available at most parts stores.

Should be the same as what? Sorry, I don't understand. The old one is 16 spline. The new one needs to be 27 spline. Thanks for the replies!

I am sorry, should have been more clear. An auto yoke (27 spline) from a newer vehicle should work fine. When I changed my 66 from 3 speed to 350TH I used Advance Auto U-Joints Part #1-0153BF. I got a yoke from the junkyard too. I think a 700R yoke will work as well.

You want to get an earlier version of the 27 spline yoke so you use the same series of u joints (1310) as your rear u joint is. In later years, I believe 1980 and newer, they went to the 1325 series u joint.
