Engine ID please.

Parting a 68 right now that has a 327 listed on the spid in the glove box. The block casting numbers are 3914678. That could be a 302, 327, or 350 from 68-79. the intake is 3927184 which comes up as a 68 350 car only. The block pad numbers are VO705YV
Can i get some ideas from that? I thought all trucks had a "T" in the sequence. Everything appears original on it yet right down to the TH400 kickdown on the carb. Thanks for any help, Eric

68 327 220hp manual trans

Scroll down.

A search for Chevrolet smallblock suffix codes brings up more info than a sane person wants to deal with.

Re: Engine ID please.

The truck is a 68 and 327 is on the spid. However, the truck has an auto trans with the kickdown on the carb for a th400. I can't tell the engine has been replaced, but who knows. The trans was replaced from a 400 to a 350. So is this a truck or car engine. Also what is up with the bypass from the water pump to the intake? Thanks

Re: Engine ID please.

It looks like the engine could be original, YV translates to 68 327 with manual transmission in a C-10, 220 hp with a 4 bbl carb. someone hooked a hose into the temperature sending location on the intake manifold. Not sure why as I don't see any reason for doing it. Also, the heater hoses look a little different!

Re: Engine ID please.

So would we think the engine was replaced since it has an auto trans? I don't see any clue that it ever had a clutch. It still has the original plastic clutch delete even.
JimK, that is an old style hose heater and actually runs under the engine also. I have to look that mess over better...
So any ideas on the bypass hose???
Thanks for the info so far, Eric

Re: Engine ID please.

I looked up the suffix code "YV" on GMC Pauls listings and it says that the engine is a 240 hp, with 4 bbl and had an automatic 3 speed transmission in it. Since your truck has an automatic and it has no signs of ever being a stick, (including the very rare plastic clutch hole block off plug), I have to believe that it is the original engine and transmission. If you will get the numbers off of the transmission, I can probably come up with information on it. (There is an aluminum tag on the side of the transmission that will have stamped codes on it. I believe the tag is on the right as I remember.

Re: Engine ID please.

Jimk, that makes more sense for what you found. Unfortunately, i know the trans has been replaced with a turbo 350. I appreciate the help. Eric

I guess i would for the right price. Was told it ran fine. I cranked it over until it had good oil pressure before i started parting it. The gas was bad so i didn't try to get it running.
