60-66 LSx swaps
My original plan was a boosted sbc, since my truck is already setup with a smallblock. Lately tho, a few threads on other forums have really turned me onto the ls motors.
I've only seen a few of these in our model, including some pics of super73's 63. Who here has done the swap? Any opinions, any Links to detailed builds?

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
I have done the swap, the engine is a 5.3 but all stock. Just waiting on funds for exhaust.

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
clyde, what did you choose to use for motor mounts (3 bolt to 4 bolt adapter?), how about the fuel pump etc? I saw some threads in which you mentioned your 5.3 swap.

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
I'm working on one as well, but dont think much of the info I have is relevent. My motor is set back about 8" and I'm using an aftermarket crossmember and custom motor mounts. I used a 5.3 for now, with a ls6 intake, and looks like i"ll be using headers from a G8 GT.

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
I used the perches from POL ( Performance on Line), if I were to do it again, probably would use the ECE mount, just because of better Exhaust clearance. The trans mount you can get just about anywhere, the simpler the better on trans mount.
http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...cat=455&page=1 http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...uck/CP9427.htm The fuel pump I got from Turn Key, they had the pre and post filter, pump, oil change tattle tale sensor and the oil pressure adapter, they are not cheap and when I do another, I will go elsewhere just cuz of the high cost and less than stellar service. http://www.turnkeyenginesupply.com/e...at=1&key=parts I wish I had a camera to take pictures. If you are doing this on a 63-65 chevy truck, you will need to redo your emergency brake lines. I am doing this now so inspection can be done, I went with the 66-72 cable design. I also went with Sanderson shortie headers, CSLS1 model, ceramic coated and all, I like them. http://www.sandersonheaders.com/prod...roducts_id=191 I would be happy to tell you anything I have learned, Thealien has a very nice write up here ( see above response), just about any question a guy could think of is answered in there. Oh by the way, I used Wait4Me performance for the PCM and harness rework. Make sure you tell them what you need, If you do away with anything like AC, oil change tattle tale sensor, anything like that. They were the cheapest and it worked, you might choose otherwise. http://www.wait4meperformance.com/ Clyde65

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
Thanks Clyde. Mines a 66, I was considering NOT dealing with the e-brake, seeing as its an auto and I don't have to pass any inspections.
As for the mounts, your CPP link confused me, it went to a trans xmember? I see they have a kit with an engine crossmember, and mounts. Is that the one you were referring to? Im running a fuel cell right now, so I think the inline pump with the 'vette filter/regulator might be a better/cheaper bet for me.

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
This is what I have for the motor mounts...
http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...cat=455&page=1 The CPP is the trans mount I have, sorry. The 66 should be OK with the stock cable, on 63-65, they have a crossmember that uses a pivot type mechanism to apply the E-brakes, I am doing the full perimiter cable like the 66-72. I too have the fuel cell, I used -6 russel fittings and hose for the fuel, Look at Thealien's post on the ls, maybe that will show you where to get the filters and the pump for a reasonable amount, I saw $515.00 on the TurnKey website. Yuk!

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
City,
You can use the original equipment LS mounts with our trucks if you do a little fabrication. The OE mounts are way more sophisticated in keeping engine vibrations out of the truck than the 1950's vintage mounts most people use. Another plus is that they won't interfere with anything, headers, AC compressor etc. Tom Lamb did it one way, I did it another. Here is the thread for the way I did it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=364782 You can re-construct the original type e-brake system on the new cross member if you want. Here is a thread on that. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=381313 TR

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
City,
The plates were very easy, just some bar stock, and angle iron. The hard part was locating the engine correctly. I positioned it about 5/8" higher than the original 283 and one inch forward, tilted back 4 degrees per normal. Once I finally got it positioned I tack welded the plates to the cross member with scrap angle. Then I could unbolt the mounts, pull the engine out and then correctly position and weld the final angle mounts that give the 3 bolt holes to mount to the frame, then knock off the temporary angles. The engine is very easy to get in and out, and I have done it 4 or 5 times. Just hang it over the cross member and drop in the 6 bolts. You can easily reach the nuts on the inside of the cross member. The mounts are oil filled hydraulic, very nice. TR

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
small update; found out one of my coworkers can get pullouts from some service vans and trucks for the cable company. ALOT of 6.0's and 5.3s floating around. Hopefully I'll hear in a week or so.

Re: 60-66 LSx swaps
Hey City,
If you get a pull out be sure to get as much stuff as you can to save money. If it is 03 04 or later get the fly by wire pedal. Curise control switch, OBDII port, fuse block for the engine, battery cables, AC lines, PS lines ... I was even able to use the exhaust system and CATs back to behind the cab without modification. Good luck, TR
