Check out the progress on my cab swap. It will be a very SLOW process because of money and of my two kids that need lots of attention.

We pulled most of the front end off the donor last night and should be removing the engine, tranny, and (time permitting) the cab.

We will check out the 350 that's in the donor, but it looks like maybe it threw a rod because there's a small hole in the oil pan.

Looks like alot of parts there for a swap meet soon

There sure are a lot of parts to remove or disconnect . I made a cab swap one time all by myself , just using wood planks and a couple of jacks ( almost rolled the cab

) and that was the last one I ever wanted to do . Good luck with the swap .

What did you do about the VIN? Did you just title it to the new cab?

I haven't got to that point yet. The vin plate is on the door frame part of the cab. I'll probably just drill the rivits out of the old plate and put mine on there. You have any better suggestions? Hadn't really thought about it too much. Just thought of something else. My VIN is etched on my two side windows so I'll probably want to pull them and put them in the new doors.

The rivets are special from the factory, If you put take it off, wont you get into trouble for tampering?

I doubt anyone would ever care really. Nobody ever checks the vin number anyway. Even when you go to get your truck registered, they don't visually inspect the truck. The inspection stations look, but they don't really care. If I was really worried about it, I guess I could just rivet the plate back on the new cab. Or, I actually have the title for the new cab and could register that too.

It is technically illegal but people do it all the time.

As long as you hold both titles...no harm, no foul. Just don't get rid of the extra title.

You may be able to obtain the factory rivets if you contact a dealer in your area and explain the situation. They will most likely make you pay them to install them. Its a very big deal for the factory, they are very picky about were the rivets go.

Police check VIN'S in accidents and some traffic stops. Also to use a titled cab that is not a match to the frame VIN can be problematic to , I went through that one time . If you want To reinstall a VIN plate so it won't be noticeable They do sell the special factory rivits on line , some one must have the company name and link .

In that thread, he said that '78 was the first year for the VIN on the dash. However, that's not completely true because my '78 has the VIN on the cab. Maybe they moved it up to the dash in the later production runs that year?

My 79 has it on the dash pad. Big Red is keeping the same frame just swapping cabs (vin plates will change from cab to cab) and and front end.

This shiould be legal since body shops have been doing this for some time now changing cabs over that have been in accidents.

I might have gotten that link over on Chevy Talk but lost it when my computer went down . They were selling just hardware ( I think ? ) and had the factory duplicates and the installation tool .
