Hi All - I'm working on a '48 5-window Chevy for a buddy of mine. Doing the S10 conversion, 350TBI, 700R4, etc, etc. Anyway, he want to remove the cowl vent. Before I just destroy the thing...how do you safely remove one of these? I have not done it before, but I looked at it for a few minutes and it appears that there is some sort of butyl or other weatherstrip that's gluing it down. Is that all there is to it? Heat it up a little and pry it out?

I know you guys like pics, so here's one.

I don't own one but I think the goo you're talking about is the gasket. I should think it's spot welded somehow. Maybe take a propane torch and melt the goo out and see what's under it?

When I removed my crusty, old hard cowl vent gasket. I used a small flathead screw driver to pry it up (carefully) then scrape it off. Then I used a wire wheel to get the glue off, then paint and new gasket. Are you going to remove the vent completly? If so, cut around it as one unit and sell it.

What you are referring to as goo should be the gasket under the vent. a screwdriver will probably be enough to get it scraped out.

I'd have to go out an look on one of my cabs but I think you can unbolt the vent door/lid from under the dash pretty easily and several vendors sell a filler panel that you can weld in.

A lot of guys probably just weld the vent lid in and smooth it off but that might require a lot more smoothing than the filler panel would.

Thanks for the responses. I already have the patch panel, so I like the idea of just marking for the patch and then cutting out the whole thing as a unit.

yeah get up under the dash and un-bolt it.. you may have to pry it out but it shouldn't be difficult. Spray some w-d and let it sit for a day or so tends to soften up the rubber so you can pry it off.
