Best way to get the cab off the frame?

I`m about to start my teardown and was wanting to know what is the best wat to get the cab off. I dont want to weld anything to it. Can 4 men lift it off by hand?

These cabs are heavier than you think. Very awkward too. Mine stripped with doors nothing in them but with front glass we did with 4 guys but took my rear tires off and dropped the axle to the ground. If you can just pick it up a few inches and shuffle it back then not too bad but navigating it around is a hassle. Smashed fingers aren't fun either. LOL. Cherry picker threw door to some eye hooks in seat bolt areas with straps next time for me i think.

I want to get it off to do my frame and suspention, and to paint the underside of it. I have to replce inner and outter rockers on both sides. Would it be easier to replace them before I take the cab off or after. I dont know if there will be warping issues after I get it off or not.

Sounds like a time to invite some friends over for a BBQ My dad, my brother, a co-worker and I lifted mine off with no problem.

i would leave the cab bolted to the frame when doing inner and outer rocker repair. remove the cab when the cab repairs are done.

about how much does the cab weigh

theres thread on the board you can search for that show different ways of removing cabs, iirc about 400 with no doors..... as far as removing you can attach a 4x4 to a cherry picker and lift and remove the cab, or like stated fab something to bolt to the seat mounts and use that as a lifting point, the cabs are front heavy.....

We always us the cherry picker with a 4 by 4 strapped to the top of the cherry picker. We have found it is best to put the cherry picker as far forward as possible because the cab is front heavy.

I have lost track how many times we have done it this way, at least 10 I would think.

We tried the 4 man method, but found it was not as easy to manuver the cab around without damaging the cab or other stuff in the shop.

Yes, replace the rockers first before removing the cab or doors. It is a lot easier to get the rockers lined up right that way.

I think it depends on a couple of things.

1. what equipment you have available. A cherry picker with a 4x4 or other heavy board setup rigged to the top works good if you have a good smooth works surface and of course have the cherry picker.

2. The strong buddies deal will work but as someone said it can be a bit awkward to maneuver around tires and stuff and they aren't always available.

3. I have pulled a few cabs off by raising the cab up and putting a couple of long and string boards under it and blocking them up so that I could roll the frame out from under it. That works for one person operations where the ground is not even or no concrete or pavement is available to set the cherry picker on. I have even slid a couple off sideways that way but don't really recommend it. I did slide one AD truck cab from one frame to another by myself that way in the middle of a field so it will work.
A chain hoist and a strap will work if you have something high enough and strong enough to hang it from.
This I beam setup uses a surplus aluminum I beam but I have lifted anything and everything with it including swapping this raised van roof from one van to another. Here it is just as I was ready to push the doner van out from under the roof but I use the same rig to lift cabs off frames.


The Neighbor used a big wood beam and two stacks of pallets to lift the engine out of his semi last year so one has to be a bit innovative at times.

I have a large A-frame we use to hoist engines & trans out with. I know it will be strong enough for a stripped cab. Its 9 or 10 feet tall.
